92 Prelude fluctuating idle and

hello PZ, bare with me with this long post. so i have a 92 prelude S that i bought about a month ago, and when i bought it i knew it had this problem. whenever the car is on and idling it just fluctuates from about 800 to 2300 RPM's. Alone with this very annoying high pitch whine.

I cleaned my iacv, fitv, new plugs, plug wires and only thing that changed was that it will warm up idling around 2500. As soon as it is warmed up the idle drops and starts fluctuating. the only other thing ive done is let her warm up and turn down the idle. but oddly enough nothing changed as it turned and turned it.

A friend told me it could be a bad tps. To test it he told me to unplug it and start the car, if it stops then its bad. When i do this my car just idles around 3000 and still has the high pitch sound but no fluctuation.

could it be the bad tps that is causing the fluctuating idle? i just want a second opinion before buying a new tps. seems like it would be it but just not sure. and the high pitch sound i have no idea. maybe a belt?

heres how she sounds. ill had another video of when the tps is unplugged.

But for serious we had the same problem on my bro's car, there was a small vaccuum leak and we re wired the harness going to the tps and o2 sensor and it worked fine after an ECU reset

my car did the same, i cleaned the throttle body and the iacv, seemed to work. also could be vacuum leak. Ever had an EVAP CEL before?

Re: 92 Prelude fluctuating idle and

Actually I forgot to mention that I have had no CEL's. I just bought a can of carb cleaner and I'm going to check for vacuum leaks. Like I said when this is unplugged obviously by the video the fluctuating idle stops, but still high a high pitch sound to it. Not just because its idling high it just whines. Also a few days ago I also thought maybe the sound was my pcv valve just whistling for some reason so I replaced it but still nothing.. It seems like if the tps is unplugged and the idle stops then it wouldn't be a vacuum leak because it would keep doing it, right? I'm buy no means a mechanic I just research and study before I do anything. So i don't know if its that or what, just want some clarity before I go buy a new sensor. Anyways here is the video.

Also while I was taking this video I noticed somthing sticking up out of my positive terminal. It was a flat piece metal that was in between the terminal and the actual circular positive connector, bent into a circle. I was having a few issues with my clock on my dash and my dome light wouldn't work every few hours off and on the past week. But nothing before that. Taking this out, wiping off the terminals and tightening the wire back on fixed all that. But nothing else.

Re: 92 Prelude fluctuating idle and

So I actually have found a vacuum leak on the intake manifold gasket. Bought the parts just need coolant and lots of time. Never done this before so hopefully it's not as hard as everyone says.

Re: 92 Prelude fluctuating idle and

So after about 4-5 hours of taking my time marking hoses and rechecking the disembling photo I got out the intake manifold! The upper and lower gaskets were complete torn apart, half of the lower one was missing lol. But all the threads I read were right, it is a bitch to get out.

I also bought a throttle body gasket sence I was already taking all this off and clean the crap out of the whole intake. Was pretty disgustingly dirty.

This picture is of the before and after shots of how dirty it is and clean now. Then my upper IM and lower IM, and last what was left of my gaskets. No wonder I had such a bad idle. Ill let you guys know how it goes once everything is back on!
