Jumping tach needle when driving?

A few weeks ago I noticed my tach needle bouncing around, I thought I was tripping out, but then it went away and came back a few days later. I drove for like 20 min and I felt the engine bucking and jerking and the needle was going crazy. I had a local "mechanic" try to fix my problem, he said it was my TPS, so ok, we changed it and nothing. My timing was bad and I told him to fix it and he ended up making the timing worse, much worse the car didn't start. 1 week later I had my dads mechanic fix my timing and my car seems to idle a lot better and better engine performace. I also put in some new NGK plugs. As I took it for a test run my needle was still bouncing. Next day I decided to move my car to the shade to take off some tint with a steamer. After I was done I tried to turn her on and the needle would bounce then the car would stall and die. Kept trying and nothing. So I had to push her. Next morning car starts right up. Few hours later I was working on her, turned her on, and she does the same exact thing, needle bounces, jerks, and she dies. It's getting me frustrated. I need to get her fixed asap. I have done some research and I heard it can be a bad igniter? I took off the dizzy cap and there was some oil in there. Idk when was the last time the last owners changed it so might as well just put a new dizzy in? Thanks in advance.

Re: Jumping tach needle when driving?

bouncing tach is a sign of bad distributor. go to autozone they give you life time replacement.

Not sure if the distributor has fixed the problem but also check the wiring harness going to the coil. I had the same symptoms on my 01 and I replaced the distributor and still same problem. The pins in the connector to my coil were loose. I pulled apart the connector and carefully tightened them up and the problem went away.

Got a new dizzy at autozone, put it on, yes I put it on right, and the car didn't start. Put the old one back one and it started, but it died shorty after. It started 3 more times, tach needle bounced then the car died. The old dizzy seemed to be defective.

Re: Jumping tach needle when driving?

I put the new dizzy in and my car started. I took it around the block with no bouncing tach. The only thing that bugs me is when i turn the key to the on position i would hear alot of clicks coming from the main relay and the check engine light is blinking dimly with the clicks. other times it would turn on like normal and shut off. What could this be? I also hear something coming from the engine bay, like a click. Also forgot to add I can hear like a whistling sound coming from the dash and then i hear the main relay click and fuel pump prime. sometimes it wont do this, but sometimes it will. something shorted perhaps?

It was a blown fuse, replaced it and it stopped clicking and clock works now. I went for a test drive and my car died while driving ugh

Re: Jumping tach needle when driving?

I had a similar problem where occasionally the whole dash would spaz out - bouncing needles, flickering lights, the works. Eventually I parked it to pick up a sandwich and when I went back to it it would crank over and fire but would die as soon as you let go of the key. Turned out to be the ignition switch. The "run" position contacts were burned out. The bouncing needles was actually the contact arcing internally right before death. (the solder from the switch actually melted and ran down to the bottom of the steering column cover.)

You can replace the switch for like $30, and you don't have to replace the ignition cylinder to do it.
