Help me solve these rattles...

it's driving me f***ing nuts!

Firstly: SUNROOF rattle is driving me insane. I searched and searched and only solution I could find is: tear apart the sunroof and tighten everything you see, OR grease the hell out of the sunroof track. If anyone has any other solutions that worked for them I'd like to hear it. So far all I've found are temporary fixes that might not even work. Heck, I folded up a piece of cardboard to wedge in so it doesn't rattle but still rattles!

Secondly I had an alignment done a few days ago and now the rear of my car seems to wobble when I go over bumps. Going to re-adjust my rear strut tower bar (I don't think I installed it properly), take off wheels, closely inspect suspension and post my findings. Bushings and balljoints are the main focus as well as checking tightness of end links.

Thirdly, and this has been going on before I got an alignment: trunk rattles like crazy over bumps. Right now I THINK its the "trunk lid torsion rods" that I need to pry out. I don't need them as I have muscle to pop the trunk lid up. If that doesn't solve it, it has to be coming from my suspension.

PZ help me out and arm me with more knowledge before I spend hours cursing at my lude.

Re: Help me solve these rattles...

First paragraph: the sunroof.
My son 'cracks' his open a lil on his 93. Rattle gone. Can you pinpoint the area is stems from?
It's common that the 'door' rattles in the track and grease solves that. That would be a squeak, or click. If the sunroof housing or track is loose it's likely a clunk.
Disassembling the sunroof is a pita but quite the learning experience.. do not do it alone if you go that route. It's heavy.
Try some graphite spray in the track.

Second paragraph.
Could be your joints are wollowing out.

Third paragraph.
Again, can you isolate the area the noise stems from?
Could be the trunk closure, or the items you mentioned, or the shock towers (whick clunk over bumps) or a number of things. Again give these contact points a shot of graphite and see if it helps.

I can't stand bumps, rattles and squeaks in my vehicles. Makes me want to shoot the d@m thing.

The red car was determined a keeper after a 45 minute test drive revealed no rattles, squeaks or clunks. The black car has a rumble where a turn in the tailpipe touches the floorpan occasionaly at low idle rpms. I figure it's a motor mount thing and put up with it at red lights or lightly touch the accelerator.

Re: Help me solve these rattles...

Thanks bykfixer and can't really pinpoint the noise in the trunk other than it comes from the trunk. Before I removed my rear seats it probably muffled the rattle so I never heard it in the cabin, now that rear seats gone I hear everything back there even with having left all the sound deadening in.

Sunroof clunks, clicks, and has a continous rattle at idle.

And the rear end wobbling only started after the alignment...I have a lot of things to check but yeah joints even though when I last checked them from what I saw they all looked good with boots still intact. Also going to check my tires, the ones I'm running in the rear are crap. UCA bushings looked good but possible the ones I took off to inspect then put back came loose from not tightening enough. LCA bushings are rotten and are responsible for slight camber issue with passenger rear wheel. I can rule out wheel bearing on the basis of no poverty Sunfire/Cavalier noisy busted wheel bearing noises but still a possibility if I can't pinpoint where any of these sounds are coming from...

Re: Help me solve these rattles...

That sunroof would drive me nuts. Could be the track has a dry issue. Lack of lube has allowed play.

Re: Help me solve these rattles...

Joints look good and didn't have any excessive play. Tightened up the UCA bushings, re-adjusted and tightened rear strut tower bar, checked my end links, retorqued the sway bushings and only obvious things I found: trailing arm bushings and LCA bushings are good as trash.

For replacements I'll be looking for:
-Brand new LCA assembly w/ bushes already installed
-Skunk2 Rear toe arms

Shouldn't run me more than $250 especially if 5th gen LCA's are considerably cheaper.

As for the trunk rattling, by removing the trunk lid torsion rods the rattles back there stopped.

Also by putting weight on the rear it stops some of the wobbling. I loaded my full size spare that weighs probably 35lbs just to test it lol. Maybe a battery relocation is in order too now that I can actually appreciate proper weight distribution.

Next I'll grease the sunroof track and hopefully it quiets it down. We only have sunroof/convertible weather for a couple more months before its cold.

Re: Help me solve these rattles...

My sunroof rattled... when I took it apart to repair the rust on it, I tightened everything and when it was back together the rattle was gone. Its a good idea, rust in the sunroof is not an uncommon thing!

Re: Help me solve these rattles...

Yep but thought that was only on the 92-93's but you have a 95 so guess its all 4th gens...

I don't see a single visible speck of rust on mine though.
