Confused Transmission Fluid

Hey guys, So I have a 92 Prelude vtec h22a. Been wanting to change the tranny fluid its a manual. I have read the Prelude Service manual and it says 10w-30 or 10w-40 , I have looked in the forums and everyone is saying Honda MTF. I live in New Zealand and the honda mtf fluid here is 75-80 grade. Is that suitable for the tranny?

Cheers

Re: Confused Transmission Fluid

BLUF: Yes, use Honda MTF in your tranny. Gear oil for some reason, uses a different viscosity index than motor oil, so that 75-80 gear oil is in the same range as 20-30 weight motor oil, IIRC. Honda manual transmissions up through the early 4th gens specified 10w30 motor oil, until Honda came out with their MTF, which has an additive package tailored for transmissions. I read somewhere that Honda uses Exxon-Mobil to manufacture their oils, with a proprietary additive package -- whatever they set up for their MTF, it's really very good. The only one I like better is RedLine MTF, which is what I have in my Prelude and Miata.

Re: Confused Transmission Fluid

Honda/Acura MTF for sure. I used regular 10w-30 in one of my Honda transmissions and eventually I started to get grinding in multiple gears. In a pinch you can use regular 10w-30/40 but change to Honda/Acura MTF whenever you get a chance.

Re: Confused Transmission Fluid

I have used Pennzoil Synchromesh for the last few years. I love it. Much more than regular oil or honda mtf.

GM syncromesh is also good, quiet and smooth engagement.

Re: Confused Transmission Fluid

Do you have amsoil in new zealand?

Honda mtf for this guy. But many people swear by amsoil and royal purple products.
