Black Box Under Intake?

Does anyone know what the point of this black box under the intake is used for? It seems pretty usless, but if there is a good reason it is there I'll put it back on, but if not I was going to just plug the vaccum lines and call it a day.

Re: Black Box Under Intake?

Ditch it. It's just extra piping and an actuator for cold starts.

Re: Black Box Under Intake?

See the cold start valve I thought was on the Throttle Body? I know you can bypass that, but the reason I was asking about this is because that is some kind of electrical connector on it. I dont want to be throwing any new kinds of CEL if I dont have to.

Re: Black Box Under Intake?

Is it underneath the airbox? I think it's part of the evaporative emissions system, and is connected to the purge valve and whatnot. Essentially, it's worthless.

Re: Black Box Under Intake?

sounds like you're talking about the air intake resonator to me. most everyone takes it out.

as for short ram vs stock, i suggest stay stock and drop in a k&n filter. that's what i wish i had done.

Re: Black Box Under Intake?

The airbox bolted onto the bottom of the runners of the intake manifold is for the secondary butterfly vacuum lines. It has nothing to do with vtec. its on h23a1's as well as h22's.

This has nothing to do with Vtec or the coolant lines that go into the TB/Intake to help cold starts.

Its just extra piping with a butterfly valve that opens and closes depending on conditions - warn, cold. It just basically changes the length of the intake tubing.

But really, you never ever need, it. It will not throw a CEL.

Just rip it out and forget it. You will have to remove the front bumper to get to all the bolts, there are 4 if I recall correctly.

Re: Black Box Under Intake?

If you like bottom end torque, i suggest you keep using it unless you delete out the butterfly plate also. The function of the butterfly is to alter the air flow to retain low end power and open after low rpm. If the butterfly plate is still in the intake not working, you are restricting air into the engine at higher RPMs.

Re: Black Box Under Intake?

So if I take that black box off I will lose bottom end torque? I thought that the vaccum line/ valve on the the IAS Valve Body Assembly was the one that controls the butterfly?

Re: Black Box Under Intake?

LudimusPrime (great name btw) is a little confused. He thought you are referring to the actual Intake Manifold. He is correct in that regard, do not mess with that unless experienced.

What you are talking about is the big extra tubing in the front right fender, basically under where the battery sits. Rip it out and forget about it. Maybe go an extra step, get a Cold Air Intake and remove ALL the intake piping up to the throttle body.

This? But no picture was provided...

A picture or better, thorough description will help us help you.

Vague questions and descriptions will only lead to confusion as to what you are referencing. Case in point: Me.

Re: Black Box Under Intake?

i just did this mod last night on my h22 lude....I cant notice any loss or gains in power or torque but the car sounds more aggressive. Im happy with the way it sounds, less clutter in the engine bay and a few punds off the front end.
