How often to do oil changes

How often do you guys change your oil ?
I'm hearing every 3,000 miles then I hear every 5,000 miles. Yesterday I changed my oil for the 2nd time since I had my lude, & it had approximately 5,000 miles since my 1st oil change.

Re: How often to do oil changes

I do it once EVERY YEAR no matter how much I drive (because I dont drive that much but still I like that theres "fresh" oil)

but if you drive more Id say around 4000 miles (~6500km)

Re: How often to do oil changes

Every 3 to 5K depending on the oil. If the car does nothing but sit, once every 4 months even without driving it. Oil collects water over time and not changing it will cause damage. It's also a good thing to check your oil once a week or so, because old cars like this tend to burn and/or leak oil over time.

Re: How often to do oil changes

Oils are more advanced than ever. Also depends if conventional Vs synthetic Vs semi synthetic.

Even conventional oils these days are safe up to 7500kms/6 months.
- Bob is the Oil Guy

If anything, it's the FILTER you want to make sure is of good quality (OEM, Mobil1, etc.) as well as changed at proper intervals. I burned a lot of oil in my 3rd gen and replaced a lot of it so never bothered changing it. What I did make sure to do was change the oil filter every 5000 at least.

Re: How often to do oil changes

Only thing I can add is when it goes from honey color to brown, that's ok.
Brown to black means it's good and tired.

My B21 turns it brown quickly. And black aint far off. 3 months tops.
The H22 takes a lot longer to go from brown to black.

If you drive city driving daily, it should get changed 3 mnths or 3 k. Highway driving is less stressful on your engine so 5-6k ok.

My 5th owners manual said 7500 using Honda oil.

Read the oil myths busted thread

Re: How often to do oil changes

I think I could go every 5000 with a change. I do mostly highway driving, & I was LUCKY the other day to have finally checked the oil. I kept putting it off & putting it off to check my oil. I put so many miles on my car in weeks that I was being careless with keeping the car up.

I said all that to say...my oil level was almost EMPTY when I checked it. & just the day before I had kind of dawged the car with the A/C pumping trying to make it to my graduation on time.

-___-

I felt so bad that I was starting to not take so good care of my car after all that.
I'm back on it now & I gotta give my car the best that I can give. I love my car.
Since I bought it last year in September, I've put 13,000 miles on her already(194,500mi.) ! I wish I just had a shelter to let her sit for a couple of months to give her a break ! Sadly I don't have a shelter for her, & I'm only 18 & only have 1 car to myself to get me where I need to go.

Re: How often to do oil changes

Let's entertain this for a page or two....

If you care about your car you will not let 1,000 miles go without a full change.

If you have faith in oil companies, you can run a full pan of oil with only filter changes and oil replacement for 10,000 miles no problem.

If and only if you are sensible, you must change the oil within a time frame that makes sense to you. There are OCD people (like me) that is switching to a relocation kit to fit a larger oil filter to increase capacity and better filtration.

And if you go to the general tech forum, there are 2-3 oil threads that cover this.

Bob is the oil guy love the hell out of their cars. Period.

Re: How often to do oil changes

changed every 1000...wtf...that's absolutely insane both in metric and primitive ole imperial.

I've found the oil that works best for my car is Mobil1 10w30 high mileage synthetic blend oil and best of all it goes on sale every month for $18 a jug. Honestly doesn't burn much at all. I can go a week worry free even with 2-3 vtec pulls a week. If I could stop the last leak I know of which drips 3 drops a day when parked I'd be laughing. Stupid ass rear main seal probably. The PITA seal.

Re: How often to do oil changes

Saw an ad on craigslist where dude selling his 95 se stated he changes oil at 1000 miles..
It's not that uncommon. John Force changes his every 1000 feet.

B21 Should defintely be 1500 max... or 90 days.

Re: How often to do oil changes

FRM walls are the loophole. You never need to change the oil, just keep adding every 500 miles, lol, change the filter every 3000.

Re: How often to do oil changes

Usually oil changes are recommended every 3000 miles but if you do a lot of highway driving you could stretch it to 5000 or so, but I wouldn't stretch it to 7500 for an older car- that's way too much, but for a new car it's ok. I have had my 92 Si since new and it was recommended that it run 5w30 oil. I normally use conventional oil but I have also used the oil/synthetic mix a few times but running straight synthetic oil in an older engine is not recommended since older seals can leak. 4 of my friends with older Hondas found out after they each tried running full synthetic and they all developed oil leaks (they had no other mechanical problems), more than likely leakage from the seals. When they switched back to either regular oil or the conventional oil/synthetic mix it stopped. After that I didn't bother to try full synthetic. For an older car it is just a waste of money. You really do need to check your oil occasionally though. The minute or two it takes to check it is definitely worth the cost of preventing pricey damage to your engine if you let it seize up.

Another thing I have done for years is I pour one bottle of Lucas Upper Cylinder Lubricant & Injector Cleaner in a full tank of gas tank every time I do an oil change. It will help keep carbon buildup out of the injectors, the rings lubricated and the valve seats clean too. You can get it at Auto Zone, Advance, etc. where other fuel additives are sold and it's on sale quite often. Running that made a huge difference in cleaning up an old engine of mine so I have used it since new with my Prelude. It's cheap and WAY better than clogged injectors and bad gas mileage, especially with high gas prices.

If I waited for 500 miles, there'd be two qts left. Lol.
J/k... I add by hours, or quarts per gallon of gasoline. My preludes mostly go on short trips so I add a quart about every 3rd to 4th tankful due excessive idling and a multitude of small leaks.

I use high mile oil. Was gonna go with thicker (think 50) but decided those old alluminum rings need thin viscosity to easily slide up n down that super hard metal piston wall. Otherwise the wall will win the steel vs alluminum friction war all the more quickly.
