Is a tune necessary with these mods or waste of money?

I recently bought a skunk2 intake manifold, a 68mm throttle body, aem high volume fuel rails, walbro fuel pump, 550cc injectors , 3 in full exhaust, magnaflow dual tip muffler,AEM CAI and some new headers. My buddy said that unless you turbo the car a tune will pretty much be useless is this true? I plan on buying a high cam kit this coming week, with all those mods how many ponies am I plooking at gaining? I'm open to any suggestions aswell

If you do cams with all your bolt-ons, IMO you should tune to get the most out of all the money you've invested in the parts. I would guess you will be stoked on the difference a tune will make with all your parts relative to the stock map.

Re: Is a tune necessary with these mods or waste of money?

So a tune would definitely be worth it? Will my engine run into any trouble with all the internals stock? Engine has 112k miles. Would I need to change pistons or anything?

Re: Is a tune necessary with these mods or waste of money?

is it worth it? all i can say is if your happy with your hp/tq gain its worth it. also depends on your tuning some h22a gains atleast +30 hp + 20+ tq or more just basic bolt ons it can take about 4-6 runs on the dyno or more depending if you want a good tune. also install a atleast stage 2 clutch and 10lbs flywheel with that mods even with a good tuning and if your clutch is slipping your not gonna get the hp and tq you wanted. i have seen some people doing dyno with stock clutch and they wonder why they dont get best hp/tq at the wheels because they dont know that their clutch is not doing the job right. even you have the best parts you put in.

stock internal should handle that power well unless you have a good amount of money and time then yeah if you want to change it its up to you. You can have more hp tq if you do it. if your planning to change your cams my advice is get a better valve trains.

you can do more but its up to you.

Even without the cams, you wont get the most of of your bolt on stuff without a tune. It should make a decent difference in numbers.

Depending on the cams you get, your car may not run correctly WITHOUT a tune.

Re: Is a tune necessary with these mods or waste of money?

Don't buy anything until you find a programmable ECU or piggyback system.

High lobe cams will require springs and locks and a valve adjustment.

Be careful on your power choices as not to make your prelude unstreetable.

And My prelude had two twin headers side by side, so it's possible, lolololololol

that itself needs to be tuned, since it doesnt have iabs, stock ecu doesnt understand the new sitation anymore and the car wont run right

overkill, you dont need that big tb, its for ~290hp engines.
66mm one would be the biggest what you need (its for ~270hp engines)

better cams need higher compression (better pistons) that they would work right + better valvetrain of course

if youre doing all this (and your header wont suck) youre looking something like 225hp

what do you mean by piggyback system? and what programmable ECU would you recommend? I have another car to get to and from work so i can begin bolting the parts on the car and just tow it to get the tune later this month.

Re: Is a tune necessary with these mods or waste of money?

Phearable is a pretty reputable company that does them also.

Phearable.net - Electronic Fuel Injection Tuning Solutions - Hondata, Neptune, Crome, Ectune, AEM, Honda Tuning, Widebands, Fuel Pumps, Turbos, ECU Chipping, Chipped Ecus

And by piggyback, he means an engine management system like Hondata or AEM that plugs into your stock ECU and allows for a tune. Generally, they are more expensive than buying one of the chipped ECU's that TypeT and I recommended.

Re: Is a tune necessary with these mods or waste of money?

Blake (98vtec) is knowledgable. Pm him. You won't be dissapointed. Ask him about zinc too if you decide to rebuild the bottom end.

You should probably at least install new rings.

And better motor mounts will help you transfer your new gains to the wheels a bit better.

I agree with T that 3" is too big for your set up. You have to balance flow with back pressure. Especially bottom to mid. These motors accel at high rpm's. So the low to mid is where they need a little help.

You probably shoulda come here before spending all that dough. Simply put, some of your over sized equipment wasn't necessary. You coulda spent that dough on your ecu tuning... or great tires.. or better brakes, because sooner or later you have to woah that rocket ship you're building...

Good Luck.. and pm blake.

Re: Is a tune necessary with these mods or waste of money?

It's kinda like this... your lungs are the combustion chamer and your mouth is the exhaust pipe.
.. try blowing out a candle with a straw... not enough flow.
Then use the large end of a transmission funnel at the candle end.. too much flow
Then figure out something in between that does not expel the air from your lungs too slow or too fast but still blows out the candle.

I'm no engineer so it's hard to explain... but some backpressure is required.

Not enough backpressure vs combustion and the motor expels combustion too freely and won't last. Too much backpressure restricts combustion output.
Besides, unless he has a super-duper free header the 3" pipe is a waste due to the log jam before the tailpipe.

All things being equal, the bigger the explosion the more flow needed to continue the cycle efficiently. John Force's 5k horsepower engines need giant outlets to expel all that pressure. Downsize those pipes to our size single pipe with a catalytic converter and it won't work.
Now you put his exhaust on an H22 and don't have more than say 250 hp the motor will be way too free.. it won't last.

Re: Is a tune necessary with these mods or waste of money?

Read on the internet?

Dude I've been around cars since before Al Gore invented the internet.

Ever see a 73 buick skylark with 4" dual straight pipes and factory timing, ignition, pistons etc last very long? Me niether...

As I said I'm no engineer but I've driven a train or two.

I work for college grads whose understanding of basic do's and don'ts cannot be explained by us yahoos who just know what works and what don't.
The Honda engineers designed backpressure into these motors for reliability.

Maybe you should take a "why there's no such thing as a back pressure-less combustion engine 101"

Read on the internet... phffff, please...

Re: Is a tune necessary with these mods or waste of money?

Your using the wrong words. What you mean is the scavenging effect, that happens in the collector of the header. You only need like a foot of pipe after that. I mean why do open headers make power? Oh and if you look at any real set of open headers they have some pipe after the collector to allow for the full scavenging effect to happen.

Back pressure is a bad term that should be left for two stroke engines that need it.

Read what it says about 4 stoke engines and backpressure.

hmm back pressure. word people are wondering what the hell is backpressure on exhaust? i`ve heard about it all the time even at my old forum talked about it for months debating arguing lol. Yeah 3inch piping is too big for your car unless you have a turbo.

umm i know internet sometimes has wrong info but i think this guy on nsxprime is right he know what he is talking about. i dont know if you guys wants to read it but its up to you.
