Odd rubbing sound...?

Hey everyone,
I'm new to the forum and just bought a '92 Prelude Si (2.3L) 5-speed. Whenever I let off the gas to slow down (even in N), I get an odd rubbing sound from the front end.

Other odds and ends:
- cruise doesn't work...
- a/c doesn't work (was told that all of the freon was drained when they replaced the heater core, needs to be recharged)
- valves need to be adjusted (sounds like a penny rattling the head at times)
- previous owner put coilovers (sleeves) on the front end...feels great in turns, but horrible over bumps...i swear the only dampening is coming from the tires
- Previous owner replaces stock lugnuts with 'tuner' lugs, so the caps do not fit on the OEM wheels.
- Previous owner had the timing belt snap and bent several valves...headwork was performed by a shop and the owner was told that the valves need to be adjusted after 1,000 miles (currently at 600 miles).
- Car tries to cut-off when rolling up the windows and/or closing the roof

Interior is flawless for a 21 year old car...couple of small dents here and there.

Any advice/assistance with some of these issues would be greatly appreciated. Previously played around with mazda 2.0L's (had a 2001 Mazda Protege MP3, 2003 Mazda Protege5, and a 2003 Spicy Orange MazdaSpeed Protege).

Thanks all!
-Chris

Re: Odd rubbing sound...?

I don't think it's a tire rub...there seems to be enough clearance when it's parked...and it happens when i put it in neutral and let off the gas to slow down, so it's not under braking when the nose would be dropping...i was thinking suspension-ish or bad motor mounts? Not sure if that would cause the issue. I know the front suspension (struts/springs) need to be replaced and it could probably use new bushings/bearings just due to the car's age.

Re: Odd rubbing sound...?

did you check your motor mounts? if you step or let go the gas you should hear clunking and feel the engine vibrations. it might be your axles or your front bearings? or might be your inner fender area i forgot the name of that thing anyways is your car too low i mean really slam or ok height? there`s alot of things might be the rubbing. mine when i have 215/45/17 tires on the front it rubs when i turn. so i changed it to 205/40/17 and it didnt rub anymore.

as you mention you have a bad suspension well start checking your car like suspension parts sway bars etc to eliminate the good to bad things.
well good luck

mine 215/45/17 are ok (offset ~40)...just rear rubbed little bit. I had to cut little bit rear bumpers inside corner off - after that no problems

so did you have just "wrong" offset there or more drop than -1,5"?

Re: Odd rubbing sound...?

The front is dropped but the back isn't? Post pictures up. Someone will probably spot something you might have missed.

You mentioning that the only damping is coming from the wheels reminds me of my first set of springs on a prelude. Cheaped out. Never again!
I'd swap springs/shocks asap. If you can't afford coilovers, I'd go OEM (lot of R&D) since it's not that expensive, but you'll have that dreadful gap..
I rather the dreadful gap than a car that bottoms out on a tic tac

Re: Odd rubbing sound...?

So the rubbing is only when in nuetral?
Or when de'celarating in or outta gear?

The car trying to cut off while closing windows or sunroof indicates your alternator strains under a load. Could be loose belt, or low voltage, or grounding issue..
Try that at night and see if your lights dim too. Could be idles too low so not enough electricity being generated to keep up with the load. They usually idle a bit higher with the lights on.

Re: Odd rubbing sound...?

I haven't had a chance to really look over the car well yet...just wasn't sure if any of you had ran into the same issues. It's when the car is decelerating in or out of gear...it's a rub/vibration oddness...it causes a vibration in the sunroof if that helps? I'm going to try to get a video of it this weekend.

The front is on coilovers (cheap-o sleeves), but it really doesn't look lowered...I'll snap a few pics this evening and take a good look around/under the car and if anything doesn't look right, i'll post up a pic.

I plan on replacing the struts/springs soon...probably put new bushings/bearings in everything while i'm at it. I'd rather do all of that when I have the cash to upgrade the sway bars while i'm under there. I only drive it to/from work (5 miles one way) right now so I can hold-off until I'm able to buy all of the parts I need.

Thank you all for your help/advice! This is my 2nd Honda (first was an 89 accord when I was 16)...and it's been a couple of years since I toyed with my cars, so I feel like I'm learning all over again.

my offset is +38 i have enkei EVO 5 4 lugs and i have ground controls its really lowered no fender gap i rolled my fenders i thought that might be it but its not. the front ones are still rubbing when i turn then i found the problem the next day i took off my wheels and its rubbing from inside the body part when i turn either left or right specially when i make a u turn.
here is the sample picture of it but not my car the tires i think is too wide or my car is way too low lol.

Re: Odd rubbing sound...?

the front motor mount is completely gone...the bolt is resting on the bottom of the mount and it looks like it may be bent...i assume the other mounts are trash as well. the wheels don't move when the car is jacked-up, so everything looks fine there...I need to replace the bushings (majority of them look ripped/torn) and probably do the bearings as well. Guess I'll start investing in new struts/springs/bushings/mounts over the summer and hopefully have everything in and on in a couple of months.
