Need help choosing a project!

Hi everyone, I'm new here on the forum...see my tread in the new member.

I want to start a project, hence my name "ProjectBlack" and need help choosing the right Prelude. I want a 4th Generation to rebuilt but here on the Canadian East Coast it's hard to find a good cheap one to start with. I found 3. The 1st one is a red 92 with the engine out of the car (H23 and auto tranny, 17 inch wheels), the 2nd one is a 92 S and manual tranny, this one runs but need a front bumper and interior is not the greatest, the 3rd one is a 93 Vtec manual with 2 sets of wheels and it runs but the windshield is curently remove plus quarter panels need to be replaced. I could get the first 2 for $700 each and maybe the Vtec for $1500, what do you guys think.

I'm debating on getting the 93 Vtec or maybe I could even buy the other 2 and keep one for parts? Do you guys think i should opt for the Vtec engine or go with the others? All cars are roughly in the same shape. I'm not looking for crazy power here, i'm 36 and just looking to get it to run good and keep it as stock as possible. I would like to keep this whole project at maybe a max budget of $5000? all depends.

Any help is apreciated as this will be kind of a surprise project as a gift to the wife (she loves the 4th generation) and same time well it will keep me busy!

Re: Need help choosing a project!

Well that sounds like fun. I'm assuming you know your way around a car, but I may have misunderstood one of your statements..are you looking at actually purchasing 3 preludes to combine into one awesome one, or trying to choose one of three to work on? If you're just getting one Prelude..the VTEC of course! Definitely the most fun for the daily commuter.

If this is for your wife, can she drive stick? If so, do your best to stay away from the auto transmissions. They're pretty notorious for failing.

Re: Need help choosing a project!

I'm kind of leaning towards the Vtec myself as it is a 93 compare to the other 92s. Plus it's already black and manual tranny. The wife do drive manual. The guy is asking $1800 for the Vtec as I could get the other 2 at $800 a piece. I made an offer of $1000 on the Vtec and hopefully we will meet somewhere in the middle. It needs lots of work like a new windshield installed and some rust spots but they are all the same, at least it runs but I can't drive it as he already took the windshield out?? Lots of mileage, 300000kms but it's impossible to find something with less.

Is there some things I should look for that are problems on old Prelude... I guess as long as the body is not fully rusted, everything is interchangable on Hondas.

it's not going to be a daily commuter right away, we have 2 other cars and i also have a small scooter to go back and forth to work when the weather is nice. I'm looking for a driveable car that I can eventually turn into something nice as I've seen on this forum.

Re: Need help choosing a project!

Welcome to PZ! In my opinion, the vtec would be the way to go if they're all in roughly the same shape cosmetically. Most people end up wanting to do a vtec swap eventually anyways, so you might as well skip that whole process if you can.

Honestly though, if I had to do it all over again, I would wait for a 94-96 vtec model to pop up. I prefer the digital EL cluster that the newer models come with, along with the center console with the armrest and cup holder. Swapping from the 92-93 ones to the newer ones is done often, but it'll usually cost a few hundred bucks.

Preludes are notorious for the sunroof and the fender areas rusting, so don't be too surprised if you encounter that. On that note, I personally hate doing body work, so I would be in the market for something that was fairly clean on the outside. If I had another car like you do, the engine work and drivability of the project car wouldn't worry me too much.

Sorry for the long post! I hope I gave you something to consider at least. Good luck, and keep us posted!

If you enjoy diy projects(body work etc) buy all 3, then the list of what parts you may need will shrink as you have 2 donors to graft from.

Re: Need help choosing a project!

I'm going to check out the 93 Vtec this afternoon. If everything is in good working condition and we can agree on a price between $1000 and $1300 (he want $1800 so far) then I will go with that one. I dont really think it's worth buying other just for parts as they are not Vtec? I also found another 92 in good overall shape but for $2500. If I can get that 93 Vtec for $1300 it would be a good platform to start with. I'll be back later and hopefully get one this weekend as I can start my project.

Re: Need help choosing a project!

Well I'm now a new Prelude owner! I ended up getting a 1992 Prelude S for a really good price but it need lots of work. The vtec was a rust bucket and not worth fixing at all, first of all it was all appart. The one I got now start and drives but it need a new exhaust, windshield and right now there is no power steering?

I guess this close this tread then it's time for me to read the other treads and put this Prelude back on the road

I would post some pictures but don't know how yet...

Congrats. 92s is a dandy. Sounds like you have your hands full but have a solid foundation to work from. Cool.

Re: Need help choosing a project!

Thanks, I also found another 92 for parts. I could get the whole car, without the motor and tranny (auto anyway) for $400. I think its a good deal. I even think this shell is better than mine, I was wondering since it was an automatic, would it be hard to swap my engine and manual tranny into this other car? But the plan is to buy this part car and use what I need off it. Right now I need front bumper and exaust (flex). This part car also have some nice 17inch rims on it that I could use or sell separately.

I will learn how to post some pictures and come back. You guys will be a great help to this project.

I forgot how nice these Prelude where, it's a nice little sporty car. I'm not looking for lots of power, more of a weekend getaway car to drive around the city. I have 2 other new family cars for longer trips.

Re: Need help choosing a project!

We`ll I ended up buying another one today! so I will make one out of the 2... I got a 1992, 260000km with no engine or tranny, it`s a 4ws. I got it for really cheap and it has a set of 17 inch wheels. It was an automatic so I will swap my engine and manual transmission in it. Thanks to bykfixer and Goose, my driveway is also ful of cars! :-)

Re: Need help choosing a project!

Now that I have both 92 Prelude in my yard and both are register to my name I will start the project and get one back on the road. After a lot of thinking I will forget about the whole engine and tranny swap and just keep the 92 S. It was tempting to keep the Prelude Si 4ws but since it dosn`t have an engine and it was originally auto, I will forget about this thought and just use it for parts. I will take the front bumper and the 17inch wheel and install it on the S. I`ve been reading a lot on the forums and when I start I will post some picture of this built. It will be a budget built and I will sell the remaining parts on ebay to try to recuperate some $. The first step is trying to find a full exhaust system. Do you guys have any idea of where I should get it from and ship here in Canada? I`m not looking for any racing or crazy performance pipe since I only have a F22. I heard Magnaflow?

Re: Need help choosing a project!

Another Geritol division member. Yaaay. 49 myself.

You can definitely sell some parts off that spare car. Say like write a list of stuff you know you won't use.
I'm not familiar with what's where in Canada, but do know there are a bunch of folks in your country looking for parts.

Unless you want noise, your best bet in my opinion (for now) is a muffler shop cheap-o pipe/muffler to get the car going while you gain your knowledge of sources for stuff you need.
Check out the resource thread above for aftermarket stuff.

$5 grand is a rational number. If you spend your funds cautiously, you can come in under budget. The spare was a good move.

Re: Need help choosing a project!

Welcome!

You have a lot of preludes. you can make any variation of the prelude you want.

The part out makes the most sense, but honestly keep the nicest shell for yourself. Then work on that one. the 4th gen prelude is very forgiving about which power plant goes where and the 4WS system is rare. I won't lie it'll take time, but if you have it, the work will be rewarding.

Re: Need help choosing a project!

Thanks guys, that's my plan just to get one going and go from there. I will start to work on my S (not 4ws) since the motor runs good (well the idle is not the greatest but there is no exhaust). I just have to find some time to work on it.
1. replace front bumper
2. fix the exaust (I don't care about sound just to get it going)
3. replace the windshield and fix rust around it.
4. get it insured
5. bring it to a local shop to get it inspected
6. slowly fix everything required for the MVI and get it back on the road.
7. Then it's open for cosmetic/upgrade

If I would have more spare time or money I would drop a V Tec in my 4ws Si shell but this would be a bigger project, I will only use it for spare parts and like you guys said, just sell the parts I dont need.
