Prelude 2.2VTEC - 4WS disables after some time

Hi! :)

I just bought this lude with 2 problems:
ABS light comes on after hitting ~15 km/h (known issue/problem, sensor ring.)

So, when I start the car, the 4WS system workes like it should. I can let the car stand idle for as long as I want, and the 4WS will work like it should. Also, if I drive the car at very low speed, the 4WS *still* workes like it should. However, when I drive it on the main road in (let's say) 50 km/h (around 35 mph) the 4WS light comes on after about 1 minute. If I stop the car and let it stay off for about 5 minutes and start it again, the 4WS system workes again untill I do the same as I said.

I even got a spare ABS/4WS ECU when I bought the car, and I changed that yesterday. Same sh*t, different wrapping..

So the question is: May this issue be caused by some sensor on the wheels like with the ABS? Or do I have to clear the error codes as my Prelude might remember it from the previous ECU which was installed and does the same to "prevent" whatever it's protecting from? Because the experience/issue is *exact* the same with the new ECU. No difference at all.

Any ideas here? (:

Thank you for your time so far! ;-)

Re: Prelude 2.2VTEC - 4WS disables after some time

Yeah, will do :)
But before I do that, do you think it might be a good idea to just pull the 4WS fuse to make a total reset of the ECU, then follow the instructions wich you should after re-solder/fixing your unit? (i.e. start the car and turn the steering-wheel all the way to the right, then all the way to the left, all the way right and all the way left again to perform/register full reset) ?

Re: Prelude 2.2VTEC - 4WS disables after some time

I dont want to twist the knife in your wound, sorry, but this is exactly the reason why Id rather stay away from 4ws (like I already mentioned in your car thread)

when something CAN give you problems it WILL

Dude, it's not like the end of the world :b
I'd just love to give it a try. If it won't work, then I'll just simply pull the bulb and act like nothing ever happened :)

Re: Prelude 2.2VTEC - 4WS disables after some time

If you had a third gen you'd never get that problem ;p heh heh I have no idea why Honda would differ from something that worked so well, maybe they're both suited to the chassis for their own reasons....

Your ABS, Speed sensor, and 4ws all work in conjunction with each other. Food for thought.

That I already knew/assumed, ididdy.
I didn't *know* it exactly, but I figured since it's like a game for the Game Boy where it had "100 in 1" since the 4WS and ABS share the same box :)

I bet they get real comfy in there sometimes too! ^^,

And yes, I'll keep y'all posted once I've done the test and tell you what I'm going to do
in order to get it fix'd :)

The 4WS and ABS are separate units. 4WS ecus are marked with an ABS meaning its for an ABS equipped car. I believe all 4WS 4th gens in the US have ABS but in Japan you could get 4WS without ABS. I have a JDM non ABS 4WS ecu laying around for parts. I bet if you fix the ABS issue you will find that it is the underlying issue. The 4WS unit relies heavily on the ABS sensor "rings' on the axle.
