Stock si failed smog CA gross polluter high hc & co
If you've seen my other threads then you know this car has been the most needy prelude on the planet. Okay but it was time for smog and I thought it would pass no problem I was wrong. I've replaced the cat, 02 sensor, Pcv, air filter, fuel filter, oil change, ngk wires and plugs... I've cleaned the egr valve and throttle... Ive also done other thing that don't think involve smog but just in case I've replaced all gaskets intake exhaust head gasket, also changed valve seals and piston rings... Also all timing belt stuff. I run 87 or 91 octane. Everything is completely stock except a Megan racing muffler...
Like the title says I failed smog both 15mph and 25 I both hc and co. No was fine. I spent hours reading and now I assume I'm running rich but I can't figure how to stop it no smoke at all ever I have an H23 non vtec. Sorry for the long story. Thank in advance I hope someone can help. I'd rather not pay a shop. Oh and it's auto. |

Re: Stock si failed smog CA gross polluter high hc & co
if everything is new there, did you use oem or replacement parts?
you should clean iacv and injectors also then check your valves and ignition (and adjust them if necessary) how often you change you oil?

I'll do a valve adjustment in the morning since I didn't do it after I replaced the rings And I've owned the car 4-5 months about 2 of those month the car wasn't working and it had a crazy oil leak so it always had fresh oil in it but the filter is about 5 months old. |

And the cat is about 4 months old. I think timing is advanced I still haven't gotten my hands on a timing light. |

Re: Stock si failed smog CA gross polluter high hc & co
Just to update.
So last night I did a coolant flush and I changed the coolant temp sensor because my car was overheating and my fans would turn on late I also dumped an additive into my tank to clean my injectors. But today when I drove to work everything ran pretty normal but I'm the way home my acceleration was horrible I'm starting to think that the cat is clogged. What do you guys think? |

Re: Stock si failed smog CA gross polluter high hc & co
check distributor cap and rotor
check timing

Re: Stock si failed smog CA gross polluter high hc & co
high Hc means you have a misfire or running too rich egr doesnt help on this case. on high CO it means that you have an incomplete combustion. most likely all this problems cause by faulty sensors or faulty ignition system it also can cause high HC. Most people think that having a high Hc means bad cat but its not really the cat and yes cat can reduce the Hc but only at 30 to 40% if its on the right temperature.
first you need to check your ignition timing and distributor cap and rotors but most likely i think your ignition timing is late timing because you said when accelerating is bad. also check your cat get a infrared temp reader inlet on your cat it should read 250 to 350 degrees and outlet on your cat should read 450 to 650 degrees.if the outlet is reading low it means your cat is not working properly. BTW did you check if your cat is CA certified because if its not then get a CA certified cat. i know some sells non Ca certified cats. i have a link on how to check for high CO and to check your cat hope this helps. Re: Stock si failed smog CA gross polluter high hc & co
So you guys were right about the timing I figured it out to late my si ended up leaving me on the road it was crazy I lost all power car died and wouldn't start. The rotor in the distributor broke off it was crazy but I replaced it and redid timing and it seems to be running great. I'm going back to see if I can figure out why it won't pass smog and I'll keep everyone posted. Thanks again for the replies
