Want a new sound from my Prelude

I have had my 92 Prelude for about a year now but I am just now beginning to make changes to it. I want a deep smooth tone but I don't know how to install a new muffler and I have no clue what a "cat" is. Is there anything I can just bolt on that will give me the sound I am looking for?

Re: Want a new sound from my Prelude

only thing i know of thats a bolt on besides the cat is a turbo squealer as i like to call it basically makes it sound like you have a turbo dont waist your $ on it tho i sure wouldent. if i where you i would just get a skunk2 exhaust find a friend or shop who knows how to install it and do that if you dont want to spend $160 ish for the muffler then get a test pipe by removing the cat and adding a test pipe you well not only add about 6hp but you well get a louder exhaust not sure how well this would work on a factory exhaust tho but a $35 ebay test pipe well do the job a also give you a little extra mpg by reducing exhaust build up at the cat do some research before making any final decisions hope this helps.

Re: Want a new sound from my Prelude

Like Ryevin said, Look some up, pick an exhaust setup you like, and have a muffler shop do it for you. A cat-back refers to the part of the exhaust from the end of the catalytic converter to the end of the exhaust. The cat is the catalytic converter itself.

I like the way the skunk2 exhaust looks and it is fairly cheap. Does it have to be a certain size or anything?

Re: Want a new sound from my Prelude

You could do a catback exhaust. Basically what the cat is, is a module that your exhaust gases have to go through and it makes your gases "cleaner". From the muffler back, there is muffler (where the gases get deposited to atmosphere) then piping the leads to the stock resonator, basically it looks like piping but much larger diameter. This quiets your exhaust and removes cabin drone. Then is some more piping to the catalytic converter. It looks like a round box that has ribs on it, and will be surrounded by a metal heat shield. The catalytic converter is required to pass emissions testing depending on where you live. I don't know the stock diameter of the piping, but having a larger diameter will increase gas flow and make your exhaust louder. If you don't want something too extreme, buy a catback exhaust system (such as the skunk2) which will replace all of your exhaust from the catalytic converter back. They are a direct bolt on, you can do it yourself with some jacks, and patience. If that is too loud, you can buy a resonator (such as Vibrant) which will remove noise.

Hope this helps and good luck :)

skunk2 is 60mm - 2,36"
true 2,5" - 63,5mm custom would be ok as well

get 2,5" hi flow catalytic converter (catco and magnaflow cats are ok) there if you want to get everything out from your exhaust setup
