Short Ram Air Intake and Paint Question

I'm thinking about sanding down my Short Ram Air intake that's on my 92 Lude Si and Painting it. Reason being is that the silver/chrome paint is beginning to peel off and look horrid. So I want to give it my own custom look.

But my question here is... Has anyone here done this, if so got any pics?

Also... Should I use an engine paint, brake caliper paint, or do you think regular paint made for car exteriors would work fine?

Re: Short Ram Air Intake and Paint Question

While you're at it maybe there's a way to coat it or wrap it so to insulate it from engine heat? Just a thought.

I would use engine/caliper paint myself to avoid the paint becoming messed up under all the heat under the hood. And since that's what I used on the valve cover, just to match it up.

paint them with VHT high temp but to make sure the paint will stay use primer high temp and use high temp clear coat just do 2 clear coat it should be fine.

Re: Short Ram Air Intake and Paint Question

If you want to get a certain custom color, go to your local automotive paint/body store and see if they sell automotive paint in a aerosol can. This way, you can pick virtually any car paint color (if they can mix it for you in the can). You won't need high temp, the intake doesn't get hot. The paint isn't going to peel from heat under the hood as long as you prep right before painting.

Re: Short Ram Air Intake and Paint Question

Thanks for the input guys. I will be running up to the store next payday/weekend. I have a few ideas in mind as to what I'd like to do. I'm also going to be painting the valve cover. But I may just do that in a slate grey color using engine paint and a ghosting effect on the Honda Logo and the edges.

Re: Short Ram Air Intake and Paint Question

Could also have it powder coated, will cost more but could come out really nice.

Re: Short Ram Air Intake and Paint Question

Painting will work. Kinda hard to paint round, curved stuff and it end up looking nice. Patience is key there. In addition to the prep work others mentioned.

Powdercoat is pricey but worth the extra cost. You will see where your $ went.

Another option is to simply cover the dang thing with stickers. Sand it, krylon it a nice base color and plaster it with decals. I've been doing a thermos a few years now. You start out with large decals, place smaller ones so the big ones still show some, then die cut letters over that and little by little it becomes a work of art.

I would bet $ that the draw from the AC would out weight the gain from cooling the air.

Re: Short Ram Air Intake and Paint Question

i agree with type t on this one, short ram intakes are for looks, offer no power gains, in fact they cause you to loose power, i would say either go with stock, which has CAI chamber built into it, and gets the same air you would get from an aftermarket CAI. get rid of the short ram now while you have a good reason.
