Power Steering Mystery...

How much fluid does a 4th generation use after replacing Rack and Pinion? Guy I bought it off last October said he replaced the Rack and Pinion. Have no idea if he even put power steering fluid in it after.

So I have been driving it with no fluid and ready to fix the issue. Reason I'm asking is I have dumped 5 bottles in there.I topped it off.. drove it... checked again... added a little more topped it off... drove it again. I look this morning and I am an inch below the low level??? From above I see no leaks what so ever? I read checking the rack an pinion. Thank god the guy got a year warrentee on the rack and pinion and I have the receipt IF that's the issue. Since I am learning as I go does anyone have any pointers, links, or images I can refer too? Thx in advance.

Could be fluid is still replacing air.

Re: Power Steering Mystery...

I took off my power steering gear shaft, and drained it all. Took less than 2 quarts to fill the entire thing up from there.

Re: Power Steering Mystery...

Take a poke a hole in each dust cover on the inner tie-rods see if fluid leaks out.

Re: Power Steering Mystery...

Well sometimes you won't see dripping because our cars have scrape plate under the rack that will build a ton of fluid on and while driving it will blow all over the under side of the car ( trust me I know ). If you are losing that much fluid I would say there is a leak under there or its going into the dust boots.

Re: Power Steering Mystery...

Hope fully all the seals were done along with the rack... I wonder why the rack and pinion would need replacing... I pulled mine out after 300,000km and rack was perfect, not a scratch. But ya, one of your end seals could be going, if u wanted to do a manual conversion its possible, I'm just waiting for new seals , bearing etc...

Re: Power Steering Mystery...

Ok I gave up and took it to a shop. Guys says the power steering gear box is bad? Apparently all the power steering fluid is going into my tranny? Since when does power steering going into the transmission? Any info as to why that would happen? I'm all ears....lol

Re: Power Steering Mystery...

There is noway in hell a ps system would need a pressure signal from a vss to tell it to deliver less force at high speed, that would just be dum... hiccup!

Hee, jk bro .. He might be bang on, and its an easy easy fix to do yourself...

Vss had inlet and outlet coming from the ps valve body, i think pressure caused by spinning in the vss cause the gain control valve to move, thus reducing pressure delivered to rack poison through 4 way valve. I could be wrong. But yes two small lines of ps fluid run to the vss, and one of them is bridged into a high pressure line i believe..

Re: Power Steering Mystery...

I have no idea how it's set up on the Prelude, but my old '90 Acura Legend had a power steering speed sensor that went to the transmission. If it failed, I suppose it could leak fluid into the tranny. However, it seems like it wouldn't leak THAT much fluid.
