I just bought a 92 prelude 4ws when I'm in neutral the idel jumps back and forth from 2k-3k rmps but when I'm driving it goes away.I'm not sure what this could be. So please if anyone has any ideas for what I can do? Please let me know!!

Re: Idle PROBLEMS!!

Try adjusting the idle screw on the throttle body. Or adjusting the timing could fix the problem. Also check vacuum lines and idle air control valve. Could be a number of things but start with that. There's a pretty good write up under Final Idle Problem thread

Re: Idle PROBLEMS!!

Ever had any issues with over heating ? That would mean u have some air pockets
Check your overflow tank, and let us know if it has any fluid in it, if not, open your rad and see what the level of fluid is like.
Could be the FITV, but start off with simple trouble shooting, if im not mistaken, it MIIIGHT even be a vacuum leak. Easy to walk u through it.

Re: Idle PROBLEMS!!

IACV and FITV. I get the idle surge sometimes if I don't let the car warm up in the morning but I still have yet to take the FITV and screw in the plunger thing and back it out a half of a turn, maybe when the April weather warms up ill prolly tackle the job, good luck. Deff take off the iacv and clean it, when I took mine off it was dirty as hell.

Re: Idle PROBLEMS!!

Probably not the map sensor. But these guys have more experience than I do so I'm starting to lean towards the fitv too, just thought it may be easier to check fluid first.

Re: Idle PROBLEMS!!

Be gentle when u clean IACV, there is a little screen in there, I cleaned mine with some seafoam on a q-tip, but i still managed to push the little dimple on the screen in by mistake, make sure u dont do that :) I dont know if it affects anything adversely, but I would have rather not done it.

Re: Idle PROBLEMS!!

idle surges more often than not mean a vacuum leak. however in my old civic I had idle surges and I started by cleaning the throttle body and that cleared it up. so do that as well.

Re: Idle PROBLEMS!!

I'm new. I have a 5th gen lude. In order to get the FITV uncovered do you need to take the whole Throttle Body out to gain access? It's pretty difficult to get those screws undone because the engine and other things are in the way. P.S. Iv'e searched up and down for ways to fix the FITV and I've only found that you need to uncover the latch and screw down the "plunger" but haven't found ways to actually get in there.

Re: Idle PROBLEMS!!

My car will not pass emissions, Canadian tire said it was running to rich, they said the timing was off, what will it cost to adjust the timing and will it make my car go slower because the fuel to oxygen ratio will be different?

Re: Idle PROBLEMS!!

Your car will go vrumvrum faster once u lean it out a bit. It never hurts to have the timing corrected. If all you need is to set the timing, it should take about an hour. Should be less than a hundred bucks.. Crappy tire is a rip off tho, I'd go somewhere else.

Re: Idle PROBLEMS!!

I thought that more fuel in the chamber would make it go faster at higher rpms but any way, we paid more to get the diagnostics done at crappy tire the first time, but since we have been back and it failed again the diagnostics and emissions test was free, plus they had two mechanics working on it and they did not charge us to adjust the timing, we moved the catalytic closer like they wanted and the car still failed it's idle test very poorly, yet they cannot find anything else wrong with it! I do not know what to do, they say put lower octane gas in!!! I say that's absolute bull**** and I do not want to even try that so please if any one has answers or knows someone who can do an emissions test for me please let me know right away

Basically is it going to hurt my car if I put in lower octane and will it actually help my car pass the idle emissions test

They can not find nothing wrong and it still is not passing emissions, do I put lower octane gas and try again or go somewhere else and get a phony emissions
