Just bought a 4th gen. need HELP!

Hey all! Just joined. I bought a 4th gen '94 Prelude S.

It has a terrible F22A1 / automatic, but I bought it because the rest of the car was incredibly clean compared to all the highschool kid owned dogged out preludes I had only been finding before.

I'd like to do an H22 swap, preferably JDM. I'm not looking to put a ton of money into it, just a good quick daily driver with the JDM h22.

Could I use an American H22 5-speed tranny on the JDM? a non-LSD to keep the cost down? I've found OBD1 H22 for about $900, and almost twice that with the LSD 5-speed JDM tranny. So I'm thinking just using a non lsd 5speed would be a good cost cutting compromise? I don't plan on building this motor out.

To get a good clean reliable quick daily driver without spending tons of money, what route would you suggest? Thanks!

you can use a any H/F tranny. not much of a big difference between usdm h22 and jdm

Yeah, I guess my preference for JDM was the low milage, vs finding an H22A1 with a ton of miles.

1) Nice find!
2) Welcome!
3) Thanks for posting a pic right off the bat!

There's only been a handful of situations where I think an LSD would really have come in handy. A quarter of those situations were in bad weather, and the other 75% of them were taking off at a stop light in a bonus lane that ended 500ft ahead.. So for the cost of a JDM H22a swap, I probably wouldn't bother getting the LSD since you don't plan on beefing it up any.
H23 transmissions have a longer gear ratio and might be more comfortable to you for cruising around, and the F22 tranny has the longest ratio of the three, so if you're planning on having this thing on the highway a lot, maybe that would even be a better option for you depending on how you like to drive. For reference, going 75mph, the H22 5th gear is gonna be running the motor just under 4K RPM. For sporting around though..the H22 tranny is definitely the most fun, and not really all that irrational a cruiser when you consider the 7500 redline the H22 carries.

Agreed Lindso, unless he gets a loud exhaust. Engine drone on road trips at 4k for extended periods may become annoying...
