Dat Timin' Belt

Hey guys,

So had the lude for a month or something now, and well.. going over all service records, and remembering what the old big gray-haired, chin beard mechanic dude said..

He says, "oh, the timing belt looks fine, you prob. got another year or so on it)."
Here's the shocking part, my TB was last replaced DECEMBER 2003 at 52k. That's almost 10 freakin' years ago!

Am I being a dumbass for not takin' Sally-Delu in for surgery ASAP? I mean, she could DIE!

She's sitting at 86k right now, so it's not a mileage issue at all..
Though.. breathin', eatin', and not chewin' mechanical engineering all day err day tho and being so involved with materials myself, it basically narrows down to what effect the 34k, the weather, microscopic defects, lol oh man, list goes on and on..

SO!
What to do? Of course, you're all gonna be like, "Change that sihtt!!!"
Should money be of concern to me? Or should my baby girl be treated to a nice new piece of rubber? And maybe a water n oil pump n a tensioner to keep her runnin' closed-abused virgin-like?

Yes, yes.. 5 years.. I know. But mechanic (the one who sold it for the old lady) had me thinkin', but I double thought about my girl..

Thanks for reading and for any advice in advance!!

Pretty sure the manual's spec is XX,XXXmiles, OR Y amount of years. And I'm 90% positive Y < 10yrs. I think its like 7 years.

It's rubber; which eventually over time dries out, cracks, deteriorates, and eventually...... well, ya know.

Sometimes I manage to find a rubber that's literally years old cause I run out, come on man.. some rubber is better than no rubber!

Guess I'll probably have her go in for treatment once I shop around some. Probably within the next month, I'll try to take some pics and post 'em up!

Re: Dat Timin' Belt

Timing chain conversion sounds like a plan. (HUGE PIPE DREAM, LOL) I mean just eliminates a whole world of problems. Also, getting a goodyear belt would get you close to 75k hassle free. Those gatorbacks!

Timing chain, damn.. that'd eliminate such a demanding routine maintenance procedure off the list!

hmm.. Maybe I should buy the belt at goodyear and see if I can do it with a friend or something. Maybe just have the mechanic (I kinda trust) do the job.. though he'd probably wanna use his own belt, which would probably be a cheap one.. doubt he "only uses genuine parts"

And what's this u talkin' about, bear? oh, wait. gator? backs? What is that?

Re: Dat Timin' Belt

Gatorbacks have excellent reviews, stopped squeeling on the perfectly fine stock belt (not timing) on my old car. For the timing belt on the prelude I just did OEM. And I wish it was a timing chain. That would save so much time and money.

Re: Dat Timin' Belt

its every 60,000 miles, or 60 months, whichever comes first.
just read the maintainance schedule from the service manual
so 60 months= 5 years

so yea, you can change it now...

Re: Dat Timin' Belt

3 months ago - Got all OEM parts. Did timing belt, water pump, pulleys, all seals and gaskets in the way.

Don't think I would trust an $8 part, but then again.. I like original stuff and timing belt is too precious to cheap out on..

To everyone who posted,

And for anyone who's looking to do an H23A1 TB/WP job, PM me for the list of part numbers.

Re: Dat Timin' Belt

ehehe, Serious bro, I honestly thought that might have been a Gates Racing belt.
I saw them going elsewhere for $80 something or more, so I had a mild aneurism when I saw it for just 8 buckers. My bad...

Re: Dat Timin' Belt

hey also remember that oil (or black gunk) on your cam and crank gears are the thing that makes them slip not just because they are old, timing belts dont snap, they shred when the teeth loose grip

but those two time frames usually come around the same time, leaking oil and the rubber drying out

so if your going to replace anything might as well do all the seals on that side too (art aart :):)
