Looking to buy my first Prelude.

Hey everyone, new member here but I've been lurking for quite some time.

Anyway, I'm looking to buy my first prelude, well second actually but te first was a rusty old 87 base I had for my first car a few years ago. So I have been looking at getting a 4th gen prelude but I am having trouble deciding between two cars and figured some input from some fellow prelude lovers would help.
Here are the two cars:

Honda Prelude SR-V, Great Condition with Low Mileage ~$3000

93 honda prelude srv ~$3800

Which one do you guys think is a better deal? Are the mods worth the extra $800?

Late additions:

1995 VTech Prelude ~$2500

FS: 1993 Honda Prelude SRV - JDM H22A4 Engine 79000 kms. Immculate! ~$4500??

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

They both look good. Nearly the same milage. I think it would depend on how each of them perform. The black one had been modified more than the blue. Unless they chipped the ecu and they're not advertising it. As far as the ads go the black seems to have more extras. Especially those three rims. Test drive them and see how they do in town and on the highway. A good car should be able to handle the change in traffic and driving behavior that comes with the transfer. And being in town will be a good test of the trans. In the end it'll come down to your plans for the car.

Good luck :) they both look like sweet rides to me. Wish I could find one in that condition around here

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

They both look legit, but from what I see in the ads, I think the black one looks better. Make sure you test drive both of them, take it to a trusted mechanic to inspect it, and most importantly, GET A VEHICLE HISTORY REPORT!!! Ask about the last time the oil was changed, the timing belt and water pump were done, and why he's selling. There's a couple of other general buying tips that are laid out in the Buying a Fifth Gen thread in the Fifth Gen section of this forum. You might check that out.

Thanks guys I'll check them both out and update you with pictures and a members ride thread.

@westernprelude: I've read through that guide before and I will go through all the checks, doesn't hurt that my dad runs the biggest shop in my area either.
@antirice92 I had to google that but that's quite a good looking car

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

If it were me IDE buy the 95. There are a few things you. We'd to take into consideration
1. Blue one Already has an el cluster, leather interior' and a cup holder!
2. The black one has more mods which means it was most likely driven harder. It has a nice lip Nd the three sets of rims but IMO you would be more happy in the long run with the 95.
Also ask what condition those seats are in under those hideous seat covers.
Good luck man and welcome to PZ! Keep us updated on your purchase.

The 95 has a tear in the drivers seat.

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

That isn't to bad if its just a small tear man but one thing I've learned owning a 96 4th gen is the original leather interior is hard to come by and for you in Canada the heated seats must be the shyyyt! Get the 95 man later down the road when you learn more about 4th gens you will be glad. You can always get a wings west lip kit!

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

How expensive is a full lip kit? Not sure if I like the wings west one in particular... I looked online and they're about $500 for the whole thing, is that about right? I will add that I prefer the black paint over the azure..

Edit: Made a poll just for laughs. Vote away!

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

Depends on the lip you're wanting man but if you don't like the wings west the. I really see no point in the black one. Look at the interiors man that's Where the big differences are ( center counsel, the gauge cluster, leather. Do you know the differences in the clusters?

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

I'm quite partial to the black paint. Though that EL cluster grabs my attention all the time.
Either way, you'll come out with a great car it seems.
Good luck on your decision!

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

Yeah I know about the EL gauges, I would definitely get one from a wrecker and put it in any 4th gen i would get. New turn of events, the '95 turns out to have a rebuilt title. I agree the interior of the 95 is better minus the tear in the seat.

Two new candidates:
1995 VTech Prelude
FS: 1993 Honda Prelude SRV - JDM H22A4 Engine 79000 kms. Immculate!

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

Anyone know any sure fire ways to tell the difference between an h22 and an h22 type s? I know the valve cover is red but those can be bought and put on. Anything else? Pictures would be greatly appreciated.
Edit: double post, my bad, should've just edited the last one...

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

If you're talking about the one out of a 5th gen, it's an H22A. It will say it on the block(visible in the front- bottom of the engine in the bay). If you're talking about a 4th gen type-s, it came with the F22A1. The 4th gen VTEC model came with an H22A1

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

h22a4 is out of the 5th Gen, Base and SH. The "JDM" engines for the 4th are the F22B and H22A. That's something you have to watch out for....It's pretty common for people trying to sell ludes since not a lot of people outside forums such as this one know a lot about Preludes, so the seller either doesn't know what he's talking about, or he's just trying to throw JDM in front of it to garner a higher price for it. If you start talking some facts to him and he tries to dispute it and tell you your wrong and all this stuff, I'd say start walking away. The guy will either stop and try to bargain with you or he'll just be stubborn, and you can find another lude. So contact the guy and ask him about the engine. Be like "I saw your advertisement for the Prelude and it says that you have a "JDM" H22A4 ,and I happen to know that particular engine is not JDM. Could I see a shot of the engine and one of the engine code on the block?" And let me know what he says.

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

I think I will just go and see it and have a look myself. I would rather bring it up in person do I can read into his reaction. Taking into account that he paid for the engine swap he may just be confused or unsure of the actual engine code.

In person is always better. I just didn't know how far that was from you. That way, you can see everything about the car and not just what he wants you to know. Let us know how it is.

Also, I really like that blue one you added. Looks fresh except for the tailights, and you could probably find a set of OEM's pretty easy.

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

deffinitly the azure one, im a fan of black preludes but it was modified and the 95 has the interior everyone loves to have ;) plus after seeing owners of hondas after about 6 months to a year of owning the same car all you ever hear them talk about is how they wish they bought the car bone stock..... well there you go man learn the easy way and get the 95 blue prelude. i promise you wont be disappointed later down the road with both. but when you buy the stock prelude you can tell everyone 1 year later that all the hard work that shows today was done by me and all me!

and to answer your question honestly after its been swapped there is no way what so ever check the mileage; however you can always simply do quick diagnostics to check the condition of the motor... check the oil see if its been changed recently lightish brown color is great, the darker the worse...(in most cases diesals get black quick as hell), check the fluid level, check the tail pipe for any oil residue, and hell if they're nice you can politely ask to do a compression check on it... also dont forget to check for coolant, trans, and oil leaks underneath the car and behind the motor and especially under the distributor. make sure no check engine lights are on and if so check to see why, and then ask about a reduction in price to fix the problems. the blue one in the end looks un-raped and seems well taken care of, the only thing i see is seat covers and thats a good thing bc the leather in these cars being a near 20 years old rip like its a 20 pound weight on tissue paper lol.... im not over dramatizing it either lol

obviously ppl are going to vote for the black one more bc as of right now its got the looks that a prelude enthusiast would want; however its probably has been dogged (not saying it hasnt been well maintaind) simply saying that car has probably seen vtec and redline more than the blue one has.... in the end its what you want man im just saying in my eyes the blue 95 is the better route for the typical enthusiast.

best of luck man!

Re: Looking to buy my first Prelude.

I've decided which one I want but it's not up here. It's that one or the first black one. That azure one is a salvage and a rebuild so I don't want anything to do with it. I'm looking at both my choices this week and the weekend so I'll update you guys with my choice.

so jealous all these clean ludes are for sale for so cheap in vancouver. that SR-V looks to be in great shape. nevermind the mileage, it looks like a clean damage free shell. I say go for it. I bought my 95 sr-v with 212k km's/131k miles for $1600 and it's been hit in the past then fixed and beat up.
