Manual Conversion?

How much it would it run me if i decided to convert my Automatic 96 Prelude S to a Five Speed stick shift? It be more expensive to buy a Prelude with a stick shift shell or a Full conversion. Shortcuts are not an option for me i don't want to half A*** it if you know what im saying

Re: Manual Conversion?

You could always start with the search feature. That's probably the reason why nobody has responded because this has already been discussed on several occasions.

Re: Manual Conversion?

There's a lot of factors that go into the job to really have a good estimate on how much is costs. Are you planning on using mostly new parts from the store or dealer? If using used parts, how patient and willing are you to hunt down the right parts for the real price? Are you planning on doing the work yourself? What's your budget and will you have emergency money (ie, if a used clutch doesn't work or a used clutch cable won't bleed, etc.)?

I did my swap over the summer and it essentially cost me around $1,200 (on a 5th gen). I got every part I needed off of a totaled Lude for $400 and found a great shop in town who charged me $800 to install it. I probably seriously researched the project and looked up parts for about 3 months before I finally did it. Granted I got very lucky with my prices so I wouldn't expect to find the same deal I did.

Search, search, search. That's all I can say bro. Good luck on the swap!

Re: Manual Conversion?

^^ Not even going there...

I just got done doing a 5 speed swap in a 5th gen. I won't ever do it again. The labor was a nightmare, but partially that was because it was an engine swap too, and converting an OBD1 H22A to OBD2, but regardless, having finished the conversion, I would suggest that you just sell your automatic and go to a manual.

If you insist on keeping your prelude and going 5 speed, here's a sample of parts you will need.

*Clutch Pedal
*Master Cylinder
*Clutch resevoir
*Clutch Line
*Transmission
*Clutch kit
*Either a manual wiring harness or rig your auto harness to run the manual and have a CEL
*Manual ECU
*Manual Transmission Mount(Some say you dont have to replace this, we had to cuz the mount was bad)
*Manual gauge cluster
*Shifter Assembly
*Shifter Cables

and thats just the start...do research, and be prepared to spend more money than you budgeted.

EDIT: Wow, I resurrected this thread...
