Icon5 desperate h23a wont start

ok so im sure if i dig through the hundreds of pages on here i would find what i need but im in a time crunch so please bear with me.

ok so its a h23a1 in a 96 lude si auto, i woke up a few weeks ago tried starting it to go to work and it pretty much said f-you. it will crank with ease like it is going to start but never actually turns over and runs. i have drained the batt many times trying and yes i know i can trash the starter. so far i have removed my alarm, replaced the crank shaft position sensor, distributor, plugs, plug wires, filter and tested pump, it gets fuel all the way to the rail. it usually takes about 3 hours to get it started in the morning but eventually it will start.

......now this is where it gets interesting......

when it does finally run it runs like **** shaking the whole car like crazy and sputtering like its only hittin on 2-3 cylinders after about 30 seconds of this it smooths right out and runs like a raped ape. and will not have a single problem with it again until the next morning......cycle begins again.......

im sorry for the long ass thread im not new to forums and understand no one wants to read alot lol but PLEASE i need help!!!!! its my only daily driver and getting up at 3am every day is gettin REALLY old

Re: desperate h23a wont start

I would check the timing using a timing gun, also check your firing order... I think your main relay might be fuked or may be not.... When you are trying tostart her listen for your fuel pump, also if you managed to start her unplug the spark plug wires one by one to see which one is not firing... Report back

Alright, time to start asking the simple questions: I had this exact problem with mine and it turned out to be the dizzy...SO question A: Did you use the same fuel station you always use? B. Have you used dry gas on it when it has gotten cold in Carolina on your prelude? You might be getting fuel but it could be bad fuel.

Re: desperate h23a wont start

I had similar problems a few months back. My first solution was to replace the main relay. Then I just went and replaced the ignition control module in the distributor, the fuel filter, and the fuel pump and the problem never came back.

the fuel pump can be brand new from the dealer, but is it priming that's the question. switch your ignition to the "ON" position(when the dash light up) and hear for a buzz under the back seat...

Re: desperate h23a wont start

that sounded like a dying llama. wow

take off the valve cover, make sure the cam gears are lined up with each other. if they are, take off the crank pulley, and make sure the crank pulley is @ TDC when the cam gears are.

Re: desperate h23a wont start

Compression test?

If it has starting problems and it's not electrical or fuel problems, then maybe it's the dreaded mechanical problem?

The tensioner might have gotten loose and messed up the timings.
