Replacing main bearings questions.

One of my friends has to swap his clutch out and a dick friend dropped the car jack hardd, like really hard and now there is a loud knocking noise and im pretty sure its his main bearing, another other ideas on what it is please let me know but he asked me if he had to pull the motor out or just pull the oil pan off and swap them and since i have no idea i figured i would post this, hit me with the magic guys

Was the jack under the engine when the car was dropped?

Is it possible to change the mains with the engine in the car? Yes.
Is it an absolute PITA? Yes, cuz you need to drop the tranny, timing belt, oil pump, etc..
You'd save yourself a thousand headaches by pulling the motor and doing an entire rebuild, IMO.

yes the jack was under the car with 2x4s on it holding engine level to get tranny bolts in and a dick friend yanked the boards and it dropped hard. And i thought he was going to cry. well the kid is broke as hell so i doubt and engine rebuild is going to happen and he wants to sell the car now, but ill give him this information thanks man
