car won't start!

Ok, so my car won't start, this happened out of no where, I drove the car around 7:30pm no problems, didn't hesitate or anything, I get back in around 945-10 to head out and the car doesn't do anything! It doesn't even crank.

1. I washed the engine bay yesterday morning trying to spot an oil leak (that night the car didn't start but did just fine through the day) I covered the distributor and made sure no water got into the spark plugs.
2. I hear the fuel pump priming
3. When I release and then press down on the clutch again, I hear something click. I'm assuming a relay?

What could be the problem? I don't have time off work until next tuesday to start looking into it but I wanna have an idea.

From the little research I've done I decided I'm going to bypass the clutch switch, but from there on I have no idea what I should be loooking at, help!??? It's a 96 vtec obd2

:(

Re: car won't start!

Check your battery voltage, anything below 10-11 volts generally won't turn over the starter motor.

Check your grounds as well in the engine bay, a loose or dirty contact won't even allow the engine to attempt to turn over.

Go through your fuse/relay box and test each one.

Can't think of anything else at the moment, good luck.

Re: car won't start!

If the car doesn't do anything, the battery is stone dead. Mine did that about a week ago, I put a new battery in, and bam, it's never started better.

Are your headlights dim when you turn it on? If so, you have a sulfated battery; crystalized.

Re: car won't start!

How old is the battery? Sounds like you may have drained it (or it's old and drained itself) and needs a recharge/replacement.

This right here tells me that you're having ground issue. Make sure that your negative post and cable are tight. Even if it's tight, the contact surfaces might've been pitted where there's minimum to no contact.

If there's too much corrosion where it contact, it won't start either. It may look clean on the outside, but once you remove the negative terminal off the battery post, you'll see that there's tons of corrosion built up in there.

Good Luck!

Re: car won't start!

car wouldn't start again this morn, tested battery again and it's good, so I'm replacing the battery ground cable tomorrow because it seems like it's seen better days, and getting the alternator tested

Re: car won't start!

Are the contact points for the ground cable clean and free of paint? Also is the hardware securing it tight? There are other grounds around the engine bay that may need to be cleaned as well, not just the negative cable for the battery.

A quick fix may be to add another ground just to see if it fixes your problem right away

Re: car won't start!

Yeah everything is clean, where would the other grounds be, I mean I'll look at them but why would the car have started THEN and not now?

Re: car won't start!

If the problem is a grounding issue then a ground may be loose are corroded where it'll make contact sometimes and not other times. There should be a ground wire by the driver side engine mount, and I believe by the passenger headlight. Are the terminal clamps on the battery tight and free of corrosion as well?

Re: car won't start!

I'll check those out, the one by the headlight is the one that runs out from the same negative cable correct? and the terminal for the pos is good, the negative got replaced today with the cable

Re: car won't start!

I haven't worked or driven the Prelude for awhile so I don't recall the exact grounding locations. Pretty much wherever you see a thick black cable connected to the body. Definitely make sure both terminals are tight, if you can twist them on the battery posts it will cause the intermittent no crank issue you described.

Good Luck!

Re: car won't start!

Ground running to the valve cover was disconnected/broken so I fixed that, I pulled the starter and got it tested, but the machine at vatozone was broken so the guy, just replaced it for me, I started the car up, I'm running late today for things I have to get done but when I get back I'll check it out and see if it starts again or not.

That ground on the VC gave me the same issue, hopefully it starts consistently now!

Free starter since the machine was broken?
