this is my first post i joined because on monday i was driving my lude and i heard sizzling, i stopped and checked under the car and pretty much all the tran fluid was on the ground and the car wouldnt go into gear!!!

there were no grinding sounds and it doesnt sound like anything was damaged.
looking under the hood is see that the trans fluid sprayed everywhere in the engine bay.
there are no obviouse leaks or cracks under the car

Re: please help me, trannsmission problems!!!!

thanks for the reply! and no the dipstick is still there, it seemed like it all kinda exploded out from the passenger side, closer to the radiator, but its hard to tell because its all red and black!

the car has a trillion miles on it and the only thing i didnt check was the trans fluid before i bought it. right before it happened i noticed it was having shifting problems like it wasnt smooth and jerked alot and would viberate alot when i am sitting still in drive

im guessing really old tranns fluid is the problem?
all i need to know is am i going to need a new transmission or is the gasket or hose broken?

Our auto trannys suck, just get a 5 speed :)

It depends on the damage. You could just need new fluid, or your could have melted the transmission into a glob of useless metal. We really couldn't tell you.

ugh where do i put in the fluid? (total noob i havnt started college for automotive yet lol) does it need a special kind of fluid? my suzuki needs a weird kind of trans fluid.
also if i get the whole thing flushed will it run better or will the gears slip? i heard that when the fluid gets old it makes the gears sticky, then when the new fluid is in the gears don't work very good anymore :(
ugh if only i could drive a stick good im terrible at it!

thanks alot guys i hope i dont need the gasket replaced, but i found a transmission at a wreck yard with 160k for 250 trade (automatic) and i might as well get a newer one since the dealer said he will install it for free if i buy the transmission! :o idk ide rather not spend the 250 though

also did i say thanks alot ?

Re: please help me, trannsmition problems!!!!

Go to your local O'Reilly Auto Parts and tell them your year, make, and model. They have Honda Rated Power Steering Fluid. It does require the P/S fluid you use to be "Honda Approved/Rated". Or just about any parts store.

Also, to answer another question. "will it run better or will the gears slip?" It all depends on the past life of the tranny. If the previous owners did regular tranny flushes then new fluid should help. However, if they did not do regular flushes then you're screwed. Once a transmission gets used to having all the grit and grime in the housing, it's done. You can't flush it.. Well.. You can. But only if you want it to go to hell in a hand basket.

If you can find one in a junk yard, do not give them yours. Have the dealer put the one from a junk yard into your car, and drive on that while you rebuild the one you smashed into pieces. Then, once you're done rebuilding it. Throw that in. That way you know what mileage your gears have and can start from scratch.

You don't need college to help you with your car. I'm in college for Mechanical Engineering and I can rebuild my Honda from the lugnuts up. If you're going to replace it, we will all highly recommend you learn to drive a stick and do the swap. Auto trannys are notoriously bad and they suck to begin with.

You'll want to use Honda ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid).

Here's a guide:

Clean it, jack it up, put more fluid in, then have a friend start it. Watch exactly where it comes from and take a photo for us. Don't get too much on you.
