F22a1 Engine mods

Ok so i have the F22a1 in my lude now and need more kick. No more or interest to swap a H22 and i want the uniqueness of a n/a f22. I've been everywhere looking for a simple list and how to do and heres what i have so far:

F22a6 camshaft (not sure if i need to replace valve springs with it)

Intake, Header and exhaust. (simple Enough)

F22a6 ECU and IAB. (please explain function of both)

H23 intake mainfold ( Should i take the throttle body or keep the f22a1's)

What else would make this faster? Do you see any problems with this set up?
Anything i should change? Thanks for your help!

Please dont refer me to other forums. I've spent the last two weeks going through all of them.

Re: F22a1 Engine mods

Hey bud welcome to the forum! Lets get right to buisness.

1. Replace/Upgrade your valvetrain if you plan on going with an aggressive race cam. Check out brian crower kits. Should be one stop for you to get everything you need. If your going to retain stock cam attributes or do just a mild upgrade, your gonna be ok keeping stock valvetrain (miles on engine are critical in determining this).

2. Intake/header/exhaust, go big or go home here. If you dont plan on spending $$ in this area then dont plan on seeing much in the way of gains. ( this is true for the cam/valvetrain as well)

3. ECU is Engine Control Unit. Its your cars brain. It controls timing, ignition, fuel injection, ABS and the like. IAB is Intake Air Bypass. Im still learning about these cars myself and I dont know what its for. Hopefully someone more expierienced can chime in.

4. manifold. I would leave well enough alone in this department. You have alot on your plate as it is and your already looking at some serious cash in the other areas.

5. Anything you should change? Yes, get the car tuned professionally as you install the new parts. Its essential to get the most out of what your putting into your car. Enjoy building!- Raven

Re: F22a1 Engine mods

f-serie have pretty low compression ration, so you should be raising that with better pistons & rods, in that way your new cam would work even better.

and get better cam.. really 125 hp/137 ft·lbf (186 N m) -> 140 hp/142 ft·lbf (193 N m) ...whats the point?

then head work, port & polish at the same time you can change that valvetrain

you could port your stock intake manifold to be bigger and better
check that out to get idea
BlackTrax - Intake Manifold Spacers & Adapters

and when you have done all that with exhaust.... I bet that you need bigger injectors

everything costs, dont start to do anything unless you have atleast 5k$

"F22A6: 140 hp (104.40 kW) @ 5600 rpm. The F22A6 is the same as the F22A1 except for a slightly more aggressive camshaft, a better flowing cast exhaust manifold, a different more aggressively tuned ECU (PT6), and a different intake manifold that utilizes IAB's and also has a bigger plenum. The F22A6 also has a windage tray in the oil pan, and stiffer valve springs to accommodate the more aggressive camshaft."

Re: F22a1 Engine mods

Alright well i'm thinking that the lude is gonna need a rebuild and at that point i would start doing all the work. I have an extra head that'll fit my f22 now. should i port and put the new cam set up (i.e. the cam, valve springs). Should i change the cam gears?
and you guys know of any shops in Colorado that'll do a good port job? i think i can handle a simple polish, just not the porting.

Re: F22a1 Engine mods

the f22a6 cam along with intake, headers and a cat back exhaust will get you as fast as an h23, thats what im running so far and its pretty even. i would imagine the h23 i.m. would give you a slight advantage over them but then you would need a way of activating the secondary butterfly valves i bealive the a6 ecu has the ability to do that? not sure tho to be honest. and your prelude isnt at 125 hp its at 135 so in a way you just gained 10 hp form what you originally thought you had

Re: F22a1 Engine mods

also when you get your intake dont waste your money on a cai. just get a short ram and grab yourself some sort of tubbing to run from the outside of the car and lead it straight to your filter. i used one off of an 89 s10 carburetor but i think ive seen some really nice ones made especially for that at pep boys for 20 bucks they even sell the flow stacks you can attach to them for 20 bucks

yep, dont port that thing yourself - you probably end up ruining whole head... and adjustable cam gear of course (look better retainers as well, if you want that your setup will last)
