96 VTEC with some strange issues and I need help!

Ok, so I bought a 96 lude about 2 months ago and I have been slowly going through it making repairs. Two lingering issues that I would love some help resolving are: Cruise control isn't working (At all). The cruise switch doesn't light up, but I believe it is just burnt out. I tested the switch with a multi meter and it appears to be just fine. I checked under the dash to make sure that it has the cruise box (module, whatever it is called exactly. Small metal silver box) and that the cable is plugged into that box. Box is in place and cable is connected. That is where I stand with the cruise control. As for the CEL. It never lights up. Checked and swapped the bulb and it still won't light up. It won't even turn on for a few seconds when you first turn the key to ignition. I really don't know what to do next with this on. I am hoping to find an ECU that I could try swapping out to see if this fixes the problem. I am also seeking an ECU because every so often while driving the car if I accelerate hard, the car hits the rev limiter about 1,000 rpm before redline. If I turn the car off and then restart it, 9 times out of 10 the issue is fixed. If anyone has any suggestions I would be greatly appreciative. Thanks!!

Delete the cruise control. If it doesnt work then just get rid of it. A lot of ppl dont seem to even use it at all

for the cruise control, I would just check/test every component. sounds like you checked a few, but not all (like in the engine bay).

for the cel issues, have you checked to see what ecu is actually in there? does vtec engage? maybe get a scanner hooked up to see if there are any codes.

Re: 96 VTEC with some strange issues and I need help!

I would really like to keep the cruise control. I drive a lot of highway and it gives me a chance to relax. I am going to pull the ecu this weekend and get all the numbers from it and see if it is the correct ECU or not. I have hooked up a scanner and no codes. Vtec does engage. How do I check the cruise components under the hood? What am I testing? Voltage, bad lines that could have vacuum leak? Thank you!!

Check to see if any of the vacuum lines to the cruise control under the hood are pinched, have holes, or even have a line. Not sure about the CEL. Hope your problems with the lude get fixed.

Yeah, I deleted mine as well. Made so much more room in my engine bay. Hope you get it sorted out man. Let us know what you find.

Re: 96 VTEC with some strange issues and I need help!

I had just 'fixed' my cruise control actually.. all it took was a penny placed where the lil switch goes through the clutch pedal...it isnt supposed to go through it, taped a penny there to see if it was the problem. sure enough it was. now it has some apoxi on it and now i can be semi lazy while i drive :D anywho check your clutch pedal look for a long black button stem thing that goes through a hole. place a penny there so it presses that stem up tape it there, see if it fixes it...is the lil things i have a long road trip coming my way and i wanted to get that fixed asap and like i said, i can be lazy now thanx to a penny
