could it be the timing?

you haven't give nearly enough info for us to help you....
anything suggested will just be a shot in the dark.

do you have ac and power steering on this motor?

the screeching is ususally the accessory belt that's either too loose or tight, so check and adjust.

check your idle problem here.
the FINAL idle problem thread!!!!!

Re: FINALLY GOT IT TO START! BUT.....

1000rpm should be about normal for a cold engine. You're timing could be off. How does it rev up? You could have an idle issue.
Are you running a stock obd1 ECU?

Re: FINALLY GOT IT TO START! BUT.....

sorry should have been a little more detailed.

96 prelude h23a1. i blew my first engine and got another h23a1 that was OBD1.

i bought the jumper for the ecu and also got the engine harness for obd1.

although the harness was cut in half i reconnected each wire as they should be.

i also replaced the oil pump as well.

also have the obd1 8 wire distributor.

when i start it up it screeches and then idles really crappy. after a second or two it begins to smell bad like exhaust coming from the engine bay.

low compression maybe? not sure. also check the gasket on your exhaust manifold and see if it needs replaced. an easy way to do this is to rub dish soap around the top of the manifold were it connects to the head. rub it all the way around the contact point and start your engine. go check and see if you see any air bubbles if you do, replace the gasket. that may be where your smell is coming from.

It went through the slalom at 65.5 mph (105.4 km/h), an amazing result for the time. For reference, the 1988 Corvette took the same course at 64.9 mph (104.4 km/h).
