reading speed sensor code

on my 92 s i had been getting the codes for o2 sensor and speed sensor. i replaced the o2 sensor and now my check engine light doesnt come on untill ive been driving for about 5 minutes. can i short out the connector to read the codes while the car is still on? or how could i get around this?

if i turn the car off and connect it it doesnt throw out any codes because the car has to be running for a little bit to even give me the check engine light.

any help is appreciated. thanks
-cody
