Anything I should be doing while the dash is apart??

So I just bought my 96 lude about 3 weeks ago and I have been having some weird problems with her. Interior lights not turning on reliably, radio doing strange things, motor running rough (I believe this is fixed now), etc. In the process of trying to figure out what is wrong with the car I found that the check engine light doesn't come on at all. Not even for a brief second when you first turn the car on. I figured it was prolly just a burnt out bulb, so I took part of the dash apart to replace the bulb and found out that it is in fact not burned out. I switched it with one of the other ones just to make sure. I still have not figured out why the light won't come on, so I am planning on completely dissassembling the dash this weekend so that I can clean it all out and check all the connections etc. I am going to remove the seats and console while I am at it. I am going to run a few cables and install my radio as well. Now, while I have all of this torn apart, is there anything that you guys would recommend I check or replace at this time? Thanks guys!!

Edit: Oh, and my cruise control doesn't work either. The light on the "Cruise" switch doesn't even come on. I checked all of the fuses under the dash as well as under the hood. Need to use a multimeter to troubleshoot further.

Check your main relay behind your steering colum. Should be a brown box says mitsuba. They tend to go out from time to time and is a pita if u have dash on...

What should I check the main relay for? Or how do I check it? Should I just replace it?

1) Replace the Main Relay - you will NEVER find it as easy to get to again.
2) Clean and replace the foam rubber tape (see my alarm/dash removal thread)
3) *optional* replace the thermostat on the HVAC -- (again see dash removal thread)
4) clean, clean, clean. I Don't know about your car, but the lady that had my car before had spilled all sorts of nastiness on the dash. My car smelled SO MUCH Better after I took some lysol and papertowels to it.

some other things to check are the Mode control Motor in the drivers footwell and the Air Recirculator solenoid/motor in the passenger foot well.

that should be a decent start I 'spose. LOL

Re: Anything I should be doing while the dash is apart??

Thanks for the tips! Do I have to get the main relay from the dealership? I mentioned it to my mechanic and he said they are REALLY pricey. What all does the main relay control? I read your alarm/dash removal a few days ago actually (thank you to the search button) and it was awsome. It is really helpful to be armed with that information. That thread was great. I had my driver window not go up on me today, so I ended up taking the door panel off after I got to work. Great way to spend a friday morning! So, this weekend I am going to be taking the dash and door panels off and cleaning everything, replacing speakers, possibly changing the driver side window motor (I just had to tap the motor with a screwdriver and it rolled right up?) and checking everything I can check. I just wonder if it is really crucial that I change that main relay now, or can I wait till I have some sort of problem that warrants it. Thanks again for your help.

Re: Anything I should be doing while the dash is apart??

You can get the Main Relay from almost any auto Parts store. I HIGHLY recomend doing it now to prevent any future issues. Its main function is to provide power to the fuel pump when you turn your key to the Start or Run Position. Without it you are high and dry, literally. Trying to take it out with the dash installed is a pain in the butt.

As you saw in my pictures, it is to the left of the steering colum assembly and quite accessible without the dash in the way. I know spending money is a pain, but what happens when you are travelling on the interstate 200 miles from home and 80 miles from the nearest parts store... see where I am going here? A tow bill is a LOT MORE expensive than just taking care of the potential [damn near gauranteed] problem now.

and +1 to you for using the search feature and preparing yourself ahead of time!
