F22A1 Head Gasket

Alright, It looks like my 94 lude with a F22a1 has a blown head gasket. Keeps pushing coolant into the overflow even though temps are not hot. Low speed does not do it. When I push it then it does. It was blowing antifreeze while at 160 on my mechanical temp gauge. Just installed a new radiator today because the old one was screwed and thought it was part of the problem. Nope still does it so I am sure its a head gasket. It is the F22a1 and turbo'd. I almost want to convert to an H motor rather than replace the headgasket. What should I do?

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

Do a compression or leakdown test to verify. It's pretty quick than to replace the headgasket to only find out that it's still doing it. Thats just me though.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

Why else would it be pushing all the coolant into the rezzy then overflowing blowing it all over the windshield. Only does it when you get into the gas hard.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

I had blown headgasket before and mine didn't do that, but if it's bad enough I guess. Does your resevoir even look milky at all? That will totally be a sign of blown headgasket. I'm a tech, so I'm use to diagnosis things the right way before blaming a part.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

Yes the rezzy fluid has a milky white look to it. All signs point to a head gasket. I tried to think of any other thing it could be. I hooked up a mechanical temp gauge, When I was going down the road and give it gas the temp would go up instantly when I did. I hear that's another sign of a HG.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

I am going to pull the motor soon enough. Gonna get a Jeep to drive so I don't half to rush the car. Gonna pull the head and have it checked for warping or cracks. If it needs machine work I will have it done. Will I have the motor out I am going to put a stage 3 clutch in it while it's down. PO couldn't drive the best and the clutch is weak in it. Going to look at a few Jeeps today.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

its the hg probably internal the rezzy over flowing is due to pressure build up it wont over heat till your outta fluid also choco milk when draining oil white smoke outta exhaust if its bad enough i would def check for warped head though stop driving it also mixing coolant with oil can seize your crank just a fyi burn up your bearings and destroing your valvetrain

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

Yes, It has not been driven since I found out. Going to pull the head once I find a replacement motor. Just gonna drop a motor in it so I can go through the other motor. Would rather pull it all since it needs a stage 3 clutch put in anyhow. I will update once I start working on it. Got another ride so I am not in a hurry about it right now. Gonna pull the motor before winter time hits though.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

If anyone knows of a f22 motor fairly close to 42634 let me know. There also in 90-93 accords. I am guessing the Vtec ones will work too since compression is not any higher. I would like to swap the whole motor for now and build the other back slowly. Cheaper to buy a motor than to replace the head gasket from what I have seen.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

Where are you located? Are you saying you have a f22 motor that you'll sell? Looks like you are from Jersey so that's too far from me.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

nope i'm saying its cheaper to pick up a running F22 than to change the HG, and all other necessary components when doing a HG job.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

I see, Yes it is. The way I figured it I would have at least 200 and something bucks in doing the head and head gasket. I have found some f22 motors complete for that kind of money. Found one for 150 but it was a little far away. I will see what unfolds.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

Well guys, Yesterday I thought I would mess with the lude. I put a new thermostat and radiator cap on it. I topped it off with coolant and drove it some. I believe it could be just the rezzy leaking out letting it come onto the windshield. I ran about 23 in gas just riding around and it never really lost any fluid or ran hot. It ran at like 190 all night. 200 when I would get on it really hard. I don't think its a hg.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

It can't make up it's mind. I have no idea. Just gonna drive it now and then and run the piss out of it. If it croaks I will get another motor. Simple.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

Its the head gasket or cracked head. Fired it up today and it white smoked like crazy and smelled just like antifreeze. None that I can see in the oil still. Might be cracked. Gonna pull the motor when I get time.

f22's are dirt cheap if you can find one. Specially a intact one.

Re: F22A1 Head Gasket

Yep, I found one not long ago for 150 complete. I think I will be swapping the motor out and finding out if the current one is built like it is supposed to be. It's a very quiet motor. I will play with it when I can. Winter time is coming so that helps.
