93' Prelude Wont Start

Hello,
I have a 1993 Honda Prelude. Si 2.3L
It died while driving.
All Electronics work inside, It will crank and turnover but it wont start.
I have replaced the main relay, Fuel Filter and Fuel Pump.
I have tried to jump the CEL switch but the light wont give me a code.
I am now frustrated and need some advice on what to do next.
any help is welcome.
Thanks

also i would check the wires and see if they are in the right sequence, i know it sounds a bit rookie, but hey we can't all be perfect all the time lol

Re: 93' Prelude Wont Start

this sounds similar to what happened to my 5th gen... just choked out and died on me 3 hours into a 4 hour drive from houston to dallas. the tach was jumping up and down like crazy right before it choked and died. now it will start and run fine until it warms up, then the tach will hop around like crazy and choke and die again. i'm completely stumped too, been trying to figure it out for the past two months. i've tried the main relay, the dizzy, wires and plugs, batter, alternator, even the ignition switch and key assembly. i'm just about to give up and take it into the shop.

Re: 93' Prelude Wont Start

Well It had not been run for the winter, then I took it out in spring for its first run, everything ran fine until I past a car around 60mph and it just died, no sputtering or rpm jumping ..just died.
I have checked the battery it is fine. It will turn over but wont start. Like its not getting fuel or a spark.
What am I looking for when I check the rotor and dist. cap ?
I am the only one working on it so its hard turn it over and look for a spark.

Re: 93' Prelude Wont Start

My 1st piece of advice would be to get those codes pulled. It's the cheapest way to get pointed in the right direction. What happens when you try the jumper wire? (I'm assuming you're using a paperclip or speaker wire?).

Additional suggestions:
Turn the key in the "ON" position and listen to make sure you can hear the fuel pump power up.
A noid light tester will tell you if the injectors are getting power.

Re: 93' Prelude Wont Start

Most likely its your dizzy. Go find someone with a working one, swap it and see it again.

Spark, fuel, and then air. Follow the pattern of elimination.

Re: 93' Prelude Wont Start

when you check your distributor, check the four contacts inside the cap and see if they are worn. same with the rotor.. if you take the rotor off you can place it inside the cap kinda and see if it's even making contact. my brother's nissan ka24 had the same problem and i replaced the cap and rotor and MAF sensor and it cranked right up. I don't think it's your battery, alternator, or starter. usually when you have a no start condition those are the first things you check. but if it's turning over and everything but not running, then it sounds to me like there is no spark whatsoever. and if it is your distributor cap and rotor, then when you go to buy a new one, go straight to honda and get it.. aftermarket caps and rotors suck ass and they will just get worn down quicker than original parts. just my $.02

edit:

if you have a digital volt-ohm meter, then also check the resistance of each fuel injector. i have read that the injector resistor should be between 5-7ohms.

Re: 93' Prelude Wont Start

and as others have said, it's never a bad idea to get those codes pulled. advance auto parts/auto zone will do it for free. check your distributor cap and rotor and let us know

Re: 93' Prelude Wont Start

Thanks for the Info and the tips, I have today free so Ill try to check the dizzy.
When I try to Jump for the codes I am using a paper clip. I turn the key and the cel comes on and stays on, no blinking , no code. I know its doing something because when I jump it my ABS light will turn off, then when i remove the jump the ABS light comes back on.

Re: 93' Prelude Wont Start

I just bought my 93 prelude si 2.3, the very next day, the cam seal came completely off, I had that fixed. And then my timing belt broke, they recommended I change all seals and water pump as well, but I didn't have the money for it at the time, they got it running for me, it rained yesterday. I go out to start the car today and it won't start, it will turn over however, ABS light on and blinking d4, this thread has been very helpful to me and I will try all read suggestions tomorrow!
