starts raining, brakes starting acting up. HELP

ok so it started raining this week and all of a sudden my brake pedal starts gettning spongy. **** me. still functional but very scary to press the pedal and not get results till halfway to the floor when in the rain. so last nite i bled my front two lines pretty well(yea i know i shoulda done all 4 in proper sequence) but out a buncha air out so i figured problem solved. but i went for a test drive, started off fine, pedal was at normal stiffness but it would get spongy sometimes. drove home went to bed. today same thing, random pedal stiffness, i started testing to get a diagnosis, my pedal seems normal at highway speeds but seems to get spongy when on the streets. then when i was warming my carup tonite after class i found an important clue. i found that when i press the brake all the way down and release it spikes my idle up 200rpm or 2 little notches, every time. so am i correct in assuming that i have an issue somewhere on the vacuum part of my brake booster???? idk how the booster works but i read yd that its attached to vacuum lines and that the only way i see a brake pedal effecting the idle. and my second question is are my brakes going to randomly stop working if my booster were to fail????

Re: starts raining, brakes starting acting up. HELP

i did 2 tests to check brake booster. pump brakes w engine off pedals should get stiff, check. hold pedal down and start your car pedal should drop, check. so maybe i should go back and do a proper bleeding to all 4 lines

Re: starts raining, brakes starting acting up. HELP

you must bleed all 4, in proper sequence! you could've pushed an air bubble from the front lines to the rear, making you believe the fronts are properly bled, til you go use the brakes and hit that air pocket again.

Re: starts raining, brakes starting acting up. HELP

If you brake booster was bad it would cause a hard brake pedal, but yea bleed all 4 starting farthest from the master.

Re: starts raining, brakes starting acting up. HELP

yea so, bled all 4lines in the sequence that manual shows. went around twice and pumped each one 4-5times , no air was seen the second cycle, and the first cycle a fair amount of air was spotted leaving the passenger rear line, none from the rest. went out to test drive, same thing!! normal feeling pedal and then that occasional slip to sponginess.

idk i guess i my next step is more bleeding incase air bubbles are stuck somewhere on a bend or turn , either that or my master cylinder is going out?????

No you definitely got all the air out if you did the sequence 2 times @4-5 bleeds per wheel. Did you happen to notice any leaks by chance? If your master cylinder is bad, your brake pedal will sink to the floor generally.

no didn't notice any leaks, i didnt inspect entire lines but my levels in the resvoir seem to stay constant. ill check under the pedal and by the booster/cylinder for leaks. can my m.cylinder go bad and not leak???

**** it really does drop, not to the floor yet. it reminds me of when my master cylinder went out in this 64 ford f100 pickup that's in my driveway (havnt transferred tittle yet).

Yes, the master cylinder has cup seals internally and they can eventually go bad. What happens in short terms is when you press the brake, they are holding the fluid they push, as you are still holding the brake, they collapse and fluid gets past them causing the pedal to sink down. So if your at a stop and your brake pedal just suddenly sinks as your holding it, your master cylinder needs to be replaced.

Re: starts raining, brakes starting acting up. HELP

waittt i lieddd! so went to test drive before i dropped $200 my pedal is normal, i drove to the top of a hill and on the way down i rode my brakes even got them to smoke. my pedal stiffness and reaction felt on point every single time. so im back to being super stumped. because i havnt touched them since weds. and thursday pedal slipped to the floor once or twice but today nothing.

-can m.cylinder show signs of future failure and go back to normal??

idnt think so, air in my lines would be the only explanation for the inconsistentcey of the pedal stiffness this week. cause if something else was broke such as master cylinder wouldnt the brake failure stay constant???

Air in the lines would cause the spongy pedal, and I guess if there was that much it could get close to the floor. As for the MC it doesn't have to be consistent, it can happen at random times with everything working normal for long periods of time. So if you keep feeling your brake pedal sinking all the way to the floor at random times, your MC is bad. Thanks for the rep point lol, brakes are my favorite area of a car atm lol.

bleed it like i said i would. except this time i did like 20pumps before i started, almost twice as much air cam out as last time. must been stuck or upper part of the lines, i think i should be good, if it acts up again i will replace mc.
