Icon2 thinking about getting a 4th gen instead of a 5th gen

Hi everyone,

I've ALWAYS wanted a 5th gen Prelude. However, I have to get an automatic (sister can't drive stick) and the 5th gen automatics have too many tranny problems. Are the 4th gen automatic ludes also known for having transmission issues?

Thanks!

^^^ yes. Teach her.

I bought my car not knowing how to drive a stick but only stalled out 3 times taking it home.

Re: thinking about getting a 4th gen instead of a 5th gen

yeah, what they said! unless you just really don't have a preference. In that case, correct me if I'm wrong but the 99-01 auto trannys were better and as for the 4th gen trannys, I owned 2 autos before getting my 5 spd and both crapped out..... don't know if I just got 2 lemons or what but 2 out of 2 is pretty bad...

Re: thinking about getting a 4th gen instead of a 5th gen

that has to be pure speculation that one gen auto tranny is more likely to fail then another gen's auto tranny. yea i could see a 2ndgen lude's tranny not being as reliable as a 5thgens, or a 3rd gen lude's tranny not being as good but 4th to 5th no way. they run the same setup enless were talk ATTS

how bout this if you can afford a 5thgen, just get ur self a manual 4thgen and get ur sister an automatic old school civic or accord. you can spend around the same and have urself ur own car that uve always wanted w out a dinky auto tranny limiting ur power output aka fun

Re: thinking about getting a 4th gen instead of a 5th gen

I don't understand why if it's your car it has to be automatic for her to drive? I would agree with the suggestions to teach her to drive a stick. I learned real quick on a hill and some back country roads. It's not as complicated as people like to think

This is not true at all. I am currently quivering at the reply quoted above.

Yes, the 5th gen transmission is notorious for failing. It is not the same transmission or anything close to that of the simple 4th gen transmission. You cannot associate the two together. The above poster has no clue and no business posting on the subject.

4th gen transmissions have a really good track record. If you do not change the fluid on them, they will fail. But, that is just general maintenance. Shift solenoids can go bad, but are cheap and easy to replace.

FYI: I've got a 4th gen Auto with 275k miles on it. Original transmission.
