Axel Shaft Replacement 101

It's now clear the CV joints in my son's '92 (Auto, Non ABS, Model S) need to be replaced. It's not a big suprise, one of the CV boots was split in two.

I've read the Chiltons manual and am unclear as to what tricks are involved in replacing axel shafts. From the manual, it looks like after disassembling the lower ball joint and sliding the drive end out of the hub, I'm just going to pry out the end of the axel shaft from the transmission. There is mention of a spring clip in the manual. Will the old spring clip come out on the shaft or will it remain behind inside the transmission and have to be retrieved?

For installation, it sounds like I just put a new spring clip on the end of the shaft and press it into the transmission until it seats and doesn't easily pull back out. It is that simple or am I missing something?

Re: Axel Shaft Replacement 101

yup it's pretty much as easy as that. pry it outta the tranny, and the clip should come out on the axle.

Re: Axel Shaft Replacement 101

^x2 And a new clip should come on the new axle, as well as a new axle nut.

Re: Axel Shaft Replacement 101

Ok, confused again. In bold type the Chilton Manual states that on Preludes newer than 1991, the ball joint is intergral to the lower control arm and is not replaceable (the whole lower control arm has to be replaced). That said, am I still supposed to try and separate the ball joint on a 1992 Prelude to replace the axle? Or am I supposed to disconnect the lower control arm from the frame mount?

Re: Axel Shaft Replacement 101

haha that's why the helms manual >> chilton manual.

the BJ's are replaceable. you just remove the knuckle completely and press the BJ's in/out.
i assure you that you can unbolt the LCA from the knuckle (via the BJ), pull the knuckle outta the way to pull the axle out.
