Car jerking back and forth

When I first start my car it sounds fine, i can drive it up the road for about 2 or 3 miles until the problem kicks in. It starts jerking at about 5,000 RPM, and then by 2 or 3 more miles, it starts jerking at as low as 2,500 RPM. When i put it in neutral and rev the engine when i first start up the car it can touch the red line, but when it starts the jerking it will get up to about 4,000 RPM and then drop down to about 3,500, then back up, it won't pass around 4,000 RPM. Anyone have any idea what the problem could be? thanks

Re: Car jerking back and forth

You're going to make us guess it's a '94 Prelude, based on your signature and the fact you're asking us. :) I'm even going to assume it's an H23A car, although that's a sheer guess. If all that's correct, check to make sure the setscrew holding the rotor to the distributor shaft hasn't loosened up and/or fallen out -- if it has, the rotor drifts after the engine warms up.

Sorry, i didnt even think to post all of that, its a '93, me and my uncle put in a f22 about a month or so ago, but it was working fine until about a week or 2 though.
Also, sorry for my noobiness with cars but the rotor is the piece i see when i first take off the cap, right?

Re: Car jerking back and forth

Nothing suggests itself. What changed a week or two ago? Heavy rain? Parked over a gopher hole? Bounced the engine off the rev limiter? Might just have to go back to the basics of fuel, air, and spark, and make sure all three are getting to the cylinder. Weird things happen sometimes -- my mother-in-law complained her car was losing power time, and after lots of poking around, we found a family of mice had taken refuge in her air filter housing during a cold snap, and decided to build a nest atop the carb!

Re: Car jerking back and forth

It's gotten much hotter(from the 70s to 95) We're now messing with the temperature sensors
