Fuel pump failure

My 95' Prelude conked out this morning while I was pulling away from a station, and then would not restart. A mechanic tested everything and deduced that the fuel pump has potentially failed, saying that it is clicking, but no fuel is getting through to start the ignition.

A couple of weeks ago my horn stopped working, which i guess is unrelated, unless anyone knows otherwise??

Anyway, he said fuses etc are okay, so it's a mystery until the garage take a look at the fuel pump.

Re: Fuel pump failure

Check your main relay under your dash behind the steering wheel. To make sure it is your fuel pump turn key on and listen under the car where your door is. If u do t hear a humming sound then it's your fuel pump. If u hear the sound maybe your main relay. I had same issues about a month ago and a mechanic told me the same thing. I took the car to a certified Honda Tech and it was the main relay. Been working great ever since... Hope was helpful

Re: Fuel pump failure

Hi,
thanks for your message. The Honda dealer was full so i took to a local garage but they say they think it's electrical as there is no "spark".....they ran an engine diagnostic and it was clear..........they haven't checked the relays yet because they have not got any more time to do it today.
So basically I have no idea why it won't start......and neither do they!!

Re: Fuel pump failure

No spark you say...Might be the timing belt broke. Take the oil fill cap off and get someone to turn it over while seeing if the valves are moving.
Just a thought

Re: Fuel pump failure

Got a couple of questions to help diagnose your problems. When your car initially died out on you did you have any power at all? (radio, lights, dash etc) Does the car seems it wants to turn over but will not spark? Did you hear that humming sound? When diagnosing problems especially when it comes to power/electrical think everything that generates power such as ignition, battery, altenator, starter, distributor, spark plugs/wires, ground wires, main relay on our cars.

Is it hot where u live. I live in Fl enough said. My situation was because the main relay is in the cabin of the car when it got really hot the car would not turn over or get spark. I had to push car in a shaded area open all the doors and then it would start. I then did all my research on this came across main relay problems and googled it. A site showed me pix of the part and how to fix it. It took me and a buddy about 45 mins to do and has been great and fired ever since.

From what your issues u have described I would narrow it down to the main relay, fuel pump, spark plugs or wires, ignition switch or distributor cap. Have the mechanic check voltage to see if your getting good current to battery etc too.

Hope this helps bro. I know your anxious like I was to get back in and drive these animals lol...

Re: Fuel pump failure

No spark wouldnt be caused by the main relay, but the fuel pump not priming is a good indicator.
No spark and no priming.... does the starter engage/turn over? If it doesnt then check your clutch safety switch located in the clutch pedal assembly under your dash.

If the starter is engaging then I'm beyond stumped. Check and recheck your fuses. ALL OF THEM. Also your relays under the hood.

Re: Fuel pump failure

I was actually going to suggest the ICM. I had the same issue awhile ago. Swapped ICM and Main fuel relay and its been running fine since. OH, but if anyone else has this problem, check the ACG-S fuse too, thats a common thing.
