Icon5 I am overwhelled

I just bought a used 1995 Prelude VTEC, I believe its the SE model it has all leather black/black interior. Its my 2nd car & also the car I've wanted for years. It kicks ass, to say the least. Right now it is pretty much stock, I think it has custom shocks & air filter. So I am looking into making this thing FAST, but I am overwhelled, & frankly don't know where to start. My dad is a master mechanic so he will be assisting me (or doing most of the work) on the car. Help anyone?

PS: I've already started with custom tail lights & a carbon fiber hood is next. But those don't boost hp too much :P

Re: I am overwhelled

Custom taillights usually net you around 12hp for your model and a carbon hood not only lightens your car it increases your output by about 30 hp depending on the style of hood.

Re: I am overwhelled

You can start by adding a cold air intake, headers, high flow cat, cat back exhaust. If you plan on putting a turbo on it then don't bother with the headers. You can get things like a lighter flywheel and a stage 2 clutch. I'm assuming it's 5 speed. And if you see chips to be added then find one's that will run with turbo if you plan on it again. Other than that you're talking BIG money. But you can always go other ways that hp like getting drilled and slotted rotors and better calipers w/ pads. Good luck and let everyone exactly know how far you're wanting to take it.

Re: I am overwhelled

Thank you for the welcome! It looks like a lot of experienced people are on these forums. =)

Well okay, so what style of hood would be the best? I know some of them cause airflow & other things to go on but I am unsure of which one to get.

Ok, so with all those parts, are there any highly recommended ones that will give me the most bang for my buck? I am unsure as to if I will be putting a turbo in it or not right now we'll see what these other parts do for it & go from there. What will a lighter flywheel & stage 2 clutch do for me? I am assuming all the other parts pretty much just boost hp.

I paid $2800 for it (which I thought was a pretty outstanding deal considering it has almost no problems, & one minor ones it did have were about $40 in parts).

i want to know what the hell this guy is talking about? getting a hood doesn't increase horsepower it just lightens the car so that the horsepower you already have can accelerate the car faster. and custom taillights are completely for aesthetic purposes.
welcome to PZ by the way!

$2800 definitely seems like a great deal for that car.

Ive read that the lack of ability to detect sarcasm is a symptom of dementia. See your doctor, man. ;)

OP, Ixnay the 'custom' tail lights and get those stockies back on the car. Get a nice intake and exhaust setup to let her breath and just enjoy it before you try going crazy on it. How many miles are on the car?

Re: I am overwhelled

before you do ANYTHING. take a loooooooong hard though on whether you want to stay n/a or go boost. in the meantime, make the car more fun to drive. put some coilovers on, a front and/rear strut bar, and rear sway. that'll help handling a lot. also some nice lightweight rims and some sticky tires will help. while doing all this, think na or boost. either way, go 3" piping for the catback. you will have an increase in hp either way. then find a high quality header or start your turbo build. stay away from "chips" and don't bother tuning right now, it's just wasted money because you'll have to tune later anyway if you do a build

There are a lot of experienced problems, don't worry about the aesthetics too much.
First step, if you haven't done it is to make sure that the car is running is top condition before you go searching for power.
You already replaced a few parts and solved the problem you bought it with, just make sure that it isn't due for preventive maintenance as in timing belt and water pump. Oil change and trans fluid change are a given and make sure your cooling is sorted. Check brake disks and pads for excessive wear.
Maintenance over modding.

Dementia? Maddness? Maddness? This is SPARTA!
+1 on putting the stock lights back on the car, I can't stand modifying the head lights and tail lights for aesthetic purposes. I don't mind swapping bulbs for brighter ones though.

I second that thought, I believe this is step two after you get the car running perfectly.

Yeah, that is going to be a hard decision mostly because of the $$ involved. Okay, so are there any certain coilovers that are better then others? Same with the other parts you mentioned? Right now it handles pretty well but then again I am coming from a 1991 Honda Civic I want to get a new exhaust very soon but I cant stand how all custom exhaust makes the car sound, I enjoy the engine purr, but I do not enjoy the exhaust overwhelming all other noise.

Basically right after I got it my Dad took it for a day & checked EVERYTHING, & that is how he resolved the little problem it did have. So right now it is in top running condition. =)

I know that exterior aesthetics wont do much in terms of horsepower but it is always nice to have a unique car! Especially a Prelude I believe it already has the H22A engine. The chassis has 215k freeway miles, it resided in San Francisco for the last few years.

I attached a few more pics, I cant take too many since I'm currently at work but if there is anything specific you want to see I can post it.

Does your cupholder open and close correctly? There is a way to fix it with a paperclip if it does not close anymore. I did it to mine and it works great. Here is a how-to:

Hi! Thanks for the tip! Luckily, it does open & close correctly. I just leave it open because I usually put my phone in it & connect it for MP3 purposes.

Re: I am overwhelled

Without looking at the ID for the motor, I'm 95 percent sure that's an H22A. then again, I've just got the F22 :( so I can't be 100% sure.

If you don't know how to check, follow where the upper radiator hose connects to the block, then look directly below that a few inches, and you should see the motor ID etched into it.

Love the car! That black is beautiful, esp with the wheels.

Re: I am overwhelled

The motor is more than likely a H22a1, not an H22a unless a JDM swap was performed. There is a difference. Id say its not an h22a since the car was in SF, CA and getting an h22a to pass smog in California is damn near impossible.
