hey guys been awhile but im back with overheating

So I havent posted in a while because ive been really busy getting my GED and enlisting in the army but my lude is having a problem and i can't figure it out for the life of me.
so to make it short and sweet ill make a list i really need some help on this
i have
a bouncy idle... ive cleaned out the IACV twice so im sure i need a new one.
the car over heats @ idle only but if i turn the heater on it stays at proper temp.
I replaced the thermostat today and let it idle for awhile and it did not over heat but i can still hear the coolent bubbling and the fans don't come on until it gets too hot
I don't have a heat shield (last owner took it off) could this be a contributing factor to my overheating?
no oil in the coolent or vice versa so my head gasket is fine(compression test confirms this)
I have a feeling it could be my exposed header(stock) or my fans arn't comming on at the right time to help cool things off or the IACV and the constant revving of the engine. It does not over heat when im driving (i drive with the heater on out of fear)

any help?

Re: hey guys been awhile but im back with overheating

i never really believed heat shields even work. i mean the heat could go right around the shield. IDK, this might be the reason why i barelyyyy passed thermodynamics and heat transfer in school

if it only overheats @ idle, and the fans don't come on til its really hot, that means your fans aren't coming on early enough (duhh.) the cause of this could DEF be air in the lines, and bleeding all the air def takes alotta patience to do it correctly.
air in the lines is also the cause of bouncy idle as well, so i would without a doubt try bleeding the system the best you can first, since it doesn't cost anything.

Re: hey guys been awhile but im back with overheating

Turn on your a/c and see if the fans kick on..

If they do I would do a coolant flush if you haven't already.. Have u checked for leaks?

Re: hey guys been awhile but im back with overheating

My prelude does nothing but overheat, (that's why I'm doing a swap) my reason is because my head gastket is blown "Worst possibilty".

But the main things to check is:
Air in system: Bleed it out

Oil mix with coolant:
1: To check, look at your oil cap and if it's milky, if so, not good news.
2: Make sure your car's cool, and in neutral, take off your radiator cap and turn your car on and let it run and watch to see the coolant flow HOPING your thermostat opens, and the fans turn on. And if you get a lot of bubbles coming to the top and it's non stop, also bad news "My situation".

Sensors: You find out if these are bad if something doesn't function properly.. Example, If your fans don't turn on, it's probably the sensor.

Fans: To check fans you can ground out the plug going to your sensor on your thermostat housing by sticking say a paper clip or a single piece of wire into each of the plugs terminals. Bend the wire or paper clip into a U shape to do so. (Car has to be in final ON position but not running)

Or you can just run it without a thermostat and drive under half temperature like me! **UNLESS YOU SIT AT A LIGHT FOR TOO LONG AFTER A HARD DRIVE** Overheating may occur then. I don't recommend this option, but it keeps it cooler seeing how it's a continous coolant flow.

I know there's more, but these are all that come to mind at the moment.. Good luck.

Re: hey guys been awhile but im back with overheating

You could give this a try bc it happened to me.

I had the same/similar issue.

So I drained out all the coolant. Got the coolant sensor changed n thermostat as well as my fan connectors. Turns out the plugs were badly worn n needed to be cut n replugged back into the sockets. Then I filled it back with fresh coolant and *BAMM it's good as new.

I guess you can say I decided to do a full coolant tune up like how ppl say if you're gonna change the T-Belt to change the waterpump and other stuff while ur at it so that you'll know everything within that area is new and with a fresh start!!!

well i blead the coolent yesterday and blocked off the FTIV and IACV and still have the bouncy idle issue but i think the overheating may be because of the bouncing idle? don't know where else to look does anybody know where to find the bouncing idle thread ive searched but no luck!

I don't know why you'd block off the IACV and the FITV, seeing how those are what I fixed to fix my bouncy idle situation. I'm pretty sure the sensors are what adjust your idle automaticly, but if there's carb build up, it will read strange and cause bouncy idle. If you take the IACV off and spray some carb spray in the vents, clean all the carbon out of it, and for the fitv, just tighten the face plate inside of it all the way down. And depending on what kind of gas you use, "If it's cheap gas" it will definitely build up carb. Just run some lucas through your fuel injection and some in your gas tank.. That's actually what I'm doing today, clears it out. Don't worry about all the white smoke coming out your exhaust, that's normal.

Good luck,

Re: hey guys been awhile but im back with overheating

I only use shell premium gas (im picky with my gas) i just did a seafoam treatment not to long ago, I blocked the valves off thinking that if they were blocked off then my idle just would not bounce period. I cleaned the IACV last week and didn't seem to help. also the Idle bounces when the car is warmed up.

I've heard of someone doing a thermostat delete. They said it just takes longer for your car to warm up when its cold but keeps the car cooler. So what happens when you sit at light for too long after a hard drive? lol

Yeah, I took the thermostat out after I notticed everytime I would drive the Lude, it would overheat. It does take quite a while to warm up, and especially on a cold day sometime when i drive under 50mph after just starting the car, the temp gauge won't even hit 25%. And driving around when taking it easy, it usually sticks just at 25%.
With my situation (blown head gasket), if you sit at a light for over a minute or are going under 15mph, it might still overheat. I've had this happen a few times after stepping on it to get around the daily slow drivers, and then still catching the light.
But yeah, I only did this because it was my last option to keep the Lude cool without it overheating and blowing something.

Shell has good gas, so you're good there. To stay safe, you know it's good to always run some Lucas, or seafoam, so you're good there.
Maybe if you have a buddy with a 4th gen Lude, take his IACV and FITV off, and try it on yours, make sure to clean them first, though.
Or go to a junk yard that has a Lude and take the IACV and FITV off of it and try it on yours, after cleaning them again, of course. And tell them you'll pay them if it fixes your problem.

Re: hey guys been awhile but im back with overheating

well after bleeding the coolant and changing the T-stat it seems to not have any issues so far. im gonna switch out the temp sensor for good measure though. Ive done a compression test on the engine and read a clean 200 across the board except for piston 3 which had 205 ish and my coolent is clean so is the oil and no metal shavings in it so im 99% my head gasket is fine. if i get any more issues im just going to install a fan switch in one of the empty switch spots inside the car and let it be from there. I may end up shipping out to boot soon so i may have to get rid of the car as it is (no where to park it =(.....)
