Secondary butterfly removal?

I searched and couldn't find a DIY or a discussion about it so I thought I'd start. I googled and it just came up with crap about GSX-R's.

Is it a good idea to pull out the secondary valves on the stock intake manifolds? Will it hurt fuel mileage? I read somewhere of someone just removing the vacuum line to them but the butterflies themselves will still restrict flow.

I've got a JDM H22a all stock with the typical I/H/E. I don't have huge turbo plans with this guy or anything but I'd like to pull my intake off and clean it and possibly do this if it will help.

and for those wondering about cammed or higher hp goals, will this help their cause?

Re: Secondary butterfly removal?

Leave them alone. With your setup they're helping with bottom end power. What you can do is use the wiring from your stock intake resonator bypass and plug it into the valve for your IAB. Moves the actuating point from 4800 RPM to 4000 RPM

Re: Secondary butterfly removal?

I guess I worded it wrong. I was thinking that the tb spacers looked like they were trying to do what these things do. My bad.

but my other questions weren't answered... :( I'm trying to make this thread a little informative for those in the future looking to mess with their intakes..

Re: Secondary butterfly removal?

Like I said. Removing the IABs (the secondary butterfly plate you're asking about) on your setup will only hurt bottom end power. Now, on your stock intake, there was a vacuum box that bypassed the resonator at 4000 RPM. Since you have an aftermarket intake, you're no longer using this. You can take the two wires and run them to the vacuum box under you're intake manifold that powers the IAB plate. This moves your IAB opening point from 4800 RPM to 4000 RPM

Removing the resonator box doesn't matter if you install an aftermarket intake. We're talking about the other vacuum box

Re: Secondary butterfly removal?

Another tip for stock applications.... make sure your IABs are getting vacuum...... I was cleanin my bay the other day and I just got to tinkering. I wanted to see the IABs move in action. I revved it up.... nothing... I pulled the vacuum line off... nothing...

Apparently I had 2 vacuum hoses hooked up backwards so mine weren't even working. I switched em and I DID feel that difference in bottom end power. So ya, listen to Invadertrax and LEAVE THEM ALONE! but make sure they work in the first place...
