Thumping noise

Tonight, I went for a late night drive in my 95 Lude base model. I noticed that there was a slight thumping noise coming from the front passenger area of the engine bay/ wheel well. At first I thought "oh eff, a flat tire", but the tire was just fine. I continue to drive, and the thumping noise continues.

I immediately turned around and drove home, and the knocking continued. It drove just fine when I came home from work a few hours before, and was just sitting there (out in the rain sadly) until I took it out tonight.

It doesn't occur when it idles, only when accelerating/keeping speed, so I'm pretty sure that eliminates rod knock being the problem. It doesn't happen when I turn. It got louder as speed picked up.

So does anyone have any idea what could be causing this thumping noise?

Re: Thumping noise

Could also be that something came loose around one of the axles/CV joints. I remember on Camshafted's car, one of the bolts that holds the halfshaft to the block was loose (or something like that) and it caused the most ridiculously loud thump I have ever heard come out of a car.

Re: Thumping noise

Okay got it fixed. it was dumb.

Somehow the lugs on that wheel had worked loose. One was entirely gone, two of the others were extremely loose. Popped the spare on and its good to go.

Same thing happened to me not to long ago. Forgot to tighten the lugs all the way down. Thought my calipers had seized.

Re: Thumping noise

Yeah I facepalmed when I saw it. I figure I just didn't torque the lugs all the way.

I'm just glad my lug kit was for a 5-lug so the shop gave me the spares
