Alrite so this is whats happening... when u put the key in the ignition and turn it to the on engine the light on the dash broad doesn't come on but when u turn it all the way to start. The light on the dash board then come on. Ok so the car start but only if u hold the key. As you let go the key turn back to the on position & the car dies. Does your gf have an aftermarket security system on it? It's either that or maybe your idle is too low. Try keeping your foot on the gas just a little.

It happened to my car when I first got it dip****. Had the same exact problem and it turned out to be that my aftermarket security system kept the engine from running. And if she does have one on her car I would recommend removing it.
