Model year differences +OBD II

OK. I am for sure getting a Prelude now in the summer....the Grand Prix has got to go! Now.....what features come on what years? I was searching for a thread like this in the search engine but didn't see anything......could someone post it if they know where it's at? Thanks.

Also, are the stock sound systems any good? I hear the VTEC has a premium system with a sub? Is that true? Or are they all crap?

PS: Can someone post what OBD II is? And why is it bad? Or is it?

Thanks a bunch!!!!!!

Wrong, 4th gen vtecs come with a "sub" between the back seats. It's just a 6x9 though.

Re: Model year differences +OBD II

It would probably be easier if you just went and read the wiki about 1992-1996 Preludes. It should even have the info about the differences between OBD2 and OBD1.

There was nothing on Wikipedia about the OBD or features for what years. I'll try to earch again in the engine on here.

Re: Model year differences +OBD II

i wouldnt consider 6x9 subs lol.. But as far as audio, the stock music on a 4th gen is pretty wack of course because its in the 90's, but if you put some 6.5 inch aftermarket speakers they're very good... i had all 4 pioneers each 300watts and it was loud!!

ODB1 and OBD2 are just types of computers, obd2 is easier to read if your CEL comes on cause all you gotta do it plug in a scan tool and it tells you wats wrong, as with obd1 you have to jump the wire behind the console were the radio is at.. but theres really no saying which is better or not... in my opinion i would rather have obd1 cuz its less computer crap that can go wrong or have to worry about.

94 and up comes with the cupholder.. thats all i could really think about lol... also comes with tweeters on the corners of the dashboard

Re: Model year differences +OBD II

You can't really tune an OBD2 for boost so when people turbo their cars they convert to OBD1

92-93 had the sex blocker console, 94-96 had the normal. 94-96 is when they changed to EL gauges as well. VTEC and SE trims were the only models with full leather interior I believe. There's a **** load more differences but I don't wanna list them all haha.

Re: Model year differences +OBD II

OBD I and OBD II are just two different emission standards. OBD II is 96+. The 92 model only offered an h23a1 and the f22a1. H=dohc F=sohc. '93 was the first year they introduced the h22a1 a.k.a. vtec. I own a 92 with an h23a3 swapped from a European "Rover". It has the sex blocker in the back, non illuminated gauges, and they didn't offer the factory sub you mention. 94-96 preludes had a few minor exterior changes as well. the grill vents are different, 92-93 had one bar, 94-96 had two bars. the tweeter covers had a trim added to them in 94-96 and they changed up the center console because they realized how dumb the idea was to have the "glove box" in the back seat. I think that some of the switches were also moved to the center console as well. The bumper lights changed from amber to clear/amber. it is pretty much subtle differences that all depend on the driver's preferences. your best bet is to look for a 94-95. try to avoid obd II because you will have to pass more aspects when getting an inspection. they also made it to where a catalytic converter was REQUIRED. :)

Re: Model year differences +OBD II

Thanks guys. I'm looking for a cheap, sporty car to replace my Grand Prix with (99 GT coupe) that's giving me problems. I'm in college, going into my 3rd year so there won't be any real mods anytime soon haha I just want something reliable and good on gas, plus I've always liked the way this Prelude looked so I said better now than later to try and get one, although there are many telling me to get something newer because this car is prone to problems due to age and get a newer Prelude (97-01) which I don't like as much even though it's a beast for sure :)

I want one with the lowest miles I can find in good condition for about $5k. All of the info you guys posted is very informative. I didn't know about the little differences like that.

BUT: about the console. I've seen some Ludes with the new console with the mirror switches in the middle AND on the door. That's not standard is it? Were those swaps?

Thanks

Re: Model year differences +OBD II

I would say that no matter what year prelude you have, its pretty reliable. I've got a '92 and it runs like a dream. Its a Honda, they're built to last, unlike crappy Pontiac's :) . And it you have $5k to spend, you can find something with low miles. Its not a prelude, but my G-Ma has an '88 accord w/ almost 600K mi on it, and its still running strong. You just have to find one that has been well cared for and not driven like an F1 car.

the mirror switches i believe switched over when the console did but yes they came stock on the door in 92-93 for sure.

Kinda true haha. You need to put a sex blocker console, full amber corner/turn signals, and VTEC brakes on it. That car would have a MAJOR identity crisis on it's hands haha.

Not if you have a Modis :) I can still hook up obd1 with a Modis scan tool..

Also, every car that was produced 96+ is OBDII

OBDI FTW

I'll post an official "here's my lude" thread eventually, but my lude is the biggest mash up ever, lol. aem wideband fiberglassed into the tweeter pod, suede wrapped interior, touch screen in the dash, boost/oil pressure gauges hidden behind the dash, etc. It's definitely different. lol.
