^ what he said, vtec doesn't engage unless the ECU senses pedal position, there isn't enough oil pressure, or the engine isn't up to operating temp.

What if old cat was clogged and replacement aloowed engine to breathe better and it can actually be "felt" now. Also engine isn't being "choked down" by back pressure and can breathe? I don't have VTEC or know much about it just trying to learn more and asking if this is a possibility.

the cat theory is the only part of that that is true or possible, backpressure is a myth. poets, "Backpressure: destroying a myth," thread. - Honda Prelude Forum : Honda Prelude Forums

and even then the op wasnt specific as to what exactly was replaced. he says "full Apexi exhaust" well apexi only makes catbacks for our cars, so its safe to assume thats what he meant.
so he probably didnt replace his cat makin this guess completely irrelevant.

Disagreed. Fluid dynamics prof would fight to the death with you over that, lol. Back pressure is the resistance to flow in a fluid system. Exhaust gas being the fluid and resistance being bends and such in the pipes.

Re: OMG!!! I'VE GOT VTEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

^ True, ideally you wouldn't want back pressure but in the event of a clogged exhaust or cat it would cause back pressure. I have seen many cars that had bad cats shut down while driving at highway speeds due to building up too much back pressure and not allowing the engine to breathe. Remember the old banana or potato up the tailpipe prank kids used to pull years ago? Same pricipal. We aren't talking about oversizing the exhaust or needing back pressure just getting rid of it.

Re: OMG!!! I'VE GOT VTEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Although that article is extremely correct, back pressure is NOT a myth. It is simply a term thrown around in the automotive world by completely misguided people. It exists, just not in the way most people believe.

Re: OMG!!! I'VE GOT VTEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Agreed. It isn't "needed" as the article states. However a free flowing or even "flow promoting" exhaust is essential for proper engine performance. Last I'll comment about it getting away from OP topic.

in the 3rd cluster of words he says the exhaust replacement made the vtec work. I wish he stated why the exhaust was disabling the vtec....lol

Re: OMG!!! I'VE GOT VTEC!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't believe he said whether or not he replaced the cat or not. I can tell you from personal experience with my current car (H23A1), the cat that was on the car when I got it was so clogged that I couldn't hit 5K RPMS. Before I got there the motor would completely choke because of the massive restriction in the exhaust flow.

thats what i was thinking as well.. the ecu is fine, i never drive my car without it warming up.. oil pressure is fine too...

when i first started my car when i got the exhaust put on, i actually felt and heard the air go thru the intake and travel thru the pipe when i rev'd it... as soon as i did that, i KNEW something was up, it felt SOO different.. (ina good way)..

so yes, it was the cat. im sure it was hella clogged... when i punch it now, it feels like its "breathing" ALOT better, prolly thanks to my high flow cat now as well..

but man! the important thing is that i now have vtec!! >:-D

(my guess).. but ****, who cares! the important thing here is that i changed my exhaust and got vtec hahaha
