Would this be a wise purchase?

Hi guys, I'm brand new to this forum. Currently I drive an '02 Acura RSX type S, but am looking for a second car as a daily driver. I've come across a '92 2.3L Prelude Si, automatic (unfortunately), with 137k. The previous owner kept up on his oil changes (though he used regular oil), it's inspected until next year, and he had the belts and water pump serviced 10K miles ago. It shifts clean, drives fluidly, and is just all-around solid internally.

However, the body is kind of shot. It is suffering from a bad case of Honda cancer--2.5 inch hole low on the side skirt (rear wheel), and more rust up by the rear wheel arches (both sides), approximately 1x1/2 inch section along the arch which is rusted-through as well. There are a few other scuffs, too, that generally make the car look banged up. He's asking $2800 now (after I've talked him down from $3300) but a "good" blue book private party value suggests $2,080...also, I'm not even sure how damning rust is--is it expensive to repair, how quickly it spreads, will it hurt anything, etc.

Thoughts and advice please?

Sorry for the lack of images...I have some on my phone but don't have them hosted on a site or anything.

I would never spend $2800 on anything that has rust. You can find plenty of other preludes with that price range. I would say pass it.

Re: Would this be a wise purchase?

He thinks it is worth more because he just put a bunch of money into the timing belt and water pump and everything, I wouldn't spend more than $2,000 on it because you are going to end up spending quite a bit on body work getting it back to where it should be.

Re: Would this be a wise purchase?

Yea, those are my thoughts too. In all honesty, if he were to drop his price to $2300, I was going to buy it and just have a welder I know use his plasma cutter to replace the metal and then I'd sand/buff/paint it to something that doesn't look so abhorrent. I know it's not the prettiest solution, but I'm really just looking for a daily car I don't have to worry too much about. That treatment will run me about $120. Mechanically though, the car is sound. What seems a fair price? Would $2300 still be too much?

Re: Would this be a wise purchase?

An RSX in any trim is a daily driver compared to a Prelude IMO. But im biased :)

I paid only $2k for my Lude in damn good shape for 170k miles. No rust just kinda high miles but religiously maintained. Keep looking.

I paid $2000 for my 92SI with 175k on the clock with this rust;

Then turned around and spent $2400 on the body. x_x

Re: Would this be a wise purchase?

while the engine is low miles and it has been maintained, that rust is too extensive for such a price.

Re: Would this be a wise purchase?

dont do it. that sounds like a lot of problems that could cost up to 2500 for rust and paint fix by a pro and 2800 is way to much for a 4th gen with low miles. its auto.... you should have just turned the page at that. just keep looking. also i wouldnt recommend a 4th get as a dd they are full of problems that build up

YEOUCH!!! Yeah each one of those panels is over 500 a pop, and they have to be welded in. So youre looking at 2k just to repair that. It's not worth that.

Yeah dude, hold out. I got my 95 with one small rust spot on the driver front fender for 2800.
Just hold out, get you a 5 speed in better condition.
