H22a Swap pictures

Hi everyone, I thought I would share my progress and some photos.

I started this swap about two months ago only being able to work on it on the weekends a few hours at a time. My silver Prelude in the pics has a h22a vtec motor in it. I totaled the front end on the hwy in Dallas during rush hour traffic. Sad as I was I hunted and hunted and found a 92 Prelude with a H23 that threw a rod on CL.

It was a steal because I traded $400 dollars worth of video games and my x box elite for the car. Once I got the 92 towed to my house I started working on getting both cars on jack stands and starting the process of pulling both motors.

This was my first Honda swap and I can say it was easier than I thought. Last Sunday I finished the swap and put my p13 ecm in the car and with a little help of jumper cables the motor turned over and sounded great. It was one of the happiest moments of my life. Hearing my baby purr again.

I still have plenty of work ahead of me though. got to get her painted, straighten out a little wiring and a good bath. The tranny fluid needs changed, when I crashed my other car it squished my air filter and exploded the battery all over the engine. What a mess that was. Most of everything that was painted is now acid etched.

But all in all I am so happy and more knowagleable and enjoyed the experiance. I would like to add a thanks to my brother. He put his blood, sweat and trears in this project right along side of me.

Re: H22a Swap pictures

She runs great. Better than before. I replaced the dizzy because my old hood crunched it. It was needing to be replaced any ways. I am amazed at how well it runs.

I took the car for a test run Sunday and broke the tires loose to see if they would and it did with no hesitation. At this point I really want to get my short shifter installed. I notice the difference in shifting with out it and dont like the stock one.

Re: H22a Swap pictures

Congrats on the swap being finished. Now paint the valve cover, get a filter for your intake, clean the **** outta the engine bay, and completely de-rice the rest of the car.

Re: H22a Swap pictures

Glad to hear it. What's on your fenders? I'd replace those as well, but if you like them keep them.

Re: H22a Swap pictures

Yes I agree. I have a lot of cleaning to do and am excited about doing all of it. I am not sure about the fenders though. I probably will keep them until I paint. That will be when I make my decision. I have had Prelude fever about 2 years now, ever since I took a really good look at What I wanted in a car. The 4th gen was what I lusted over. It was a defining moment for me. I had a Dodge Neon that I was pretty much forced to buy. I never really liked it.

When the motor went out in that I was kind of glad. When it came to buying a new car, I took my time and looked around and always came back to the 4th gen Prelude. I don't think I will ever feel the same about another car.

On to the repairs. I need some advice on this. When I took the header off the head I noticed there was a decent amount of carbon build up on the exhaust ports in the head. Should I clean that crap off? Will it effect the performance of the engine if I don't and if I need to clean it off how should I go about getting it done?

Also, I really do want to paint the v.c. I was wondering what type of paint other people use to paint it, and where can I get it? Is there a specific process to doing it? I know I need to strip all the old paint first. I just want to do it right and would like to hear from people that did theirs.

Re: H22a Swap pictures

To clean the exhaust ports just use throttle body cleaner or something alike. Carbon buildup there shouldn't effect performance TOO much, but might as well clean it since you see it.

And to paint the valve cover;
Autozone sells High Heat Engine Enamel that I used.

Strip previous paint with aircraft stripper,
scuff up the surface with some steel wool,
lay 2 coats of primer,
lay 4 coats of color,
lay 2 thin coats of clear, and one wet coat,
wait to dry and then wetsand with 2000 grit sandpaper.

If you want some extra shine get out some polish and buff the **** outta it.
