strange electronic issues

so the past two days here i've been having some strange issues. here are my assumed possibilities- bad battery, alternator, or ignition switch. when i get in the car, the dome light is normal (brightness) i turn the key to the first position. radio turns on, normal. turn the key to the second position, radio stays on, but the gauges don't turn on like they are supposed to. i turn the car on and it starts and shuts down immediately. if i start the car and hold the key so it doesnt go all the way back to the on position the car will stay running, and if i let out slowly it will stay on and i can let go and the car will stay running and all my gauges will work. if i drive, sometimes its completely normal, other times my gauges and clock will flicker, my rpm gauge and speedometer will drop to 0 periodically but it will all regain power and go back up to normal. mind you this isnt happening constantly, some times it is completely okay, but if i shut the car off and start it again it will do the same thing again. i feel like my ignition switch is going bad and while driving it shorts out and thinks the car is off because my gauges will flicker on and off, and everything will lose power (fuel and temp gauges, rpm and speedometer, wipers) but during all of this, my radio stays on, perfectly fine. any ideas??? thanks guys.

Re: strange electronic issues

Sounds like the ignition switch or main relay if the car is not responding to the position of the key accordingly. Call or drive to your local Honda dealership service dept. and ask to talk to a service writer familiar with preludes and get their opinion. My local guys are very helpful because they respect a well maintained Prelude.

Re: strange electronic issues

Check the brown connector at the under-dash fuse box. this is your ignition wires from the key switch.

But I am sure it is most certainly the ignition switch shorting out. When you push the key to the Start position it disables all but the Starter and exterior light circuits. This is why your dash lights and gauges are flickering as well.

Re: strange electronic issues

My bet is the ignition switch also.

Re: strange electronic issues

thats what i figured. it just started happening the other day and i first thought it was the battery, but then i realized the gauges acting up and i figured it had to do with the ignition, because as ludimus prime said, it doesnt seem to be responding to the position of the key. i will keep you posted.
