Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

Hi everyone.

Can anyone please tell me the easiest way to add or change my trans fluid. I have a h22a motor and manual 5 speed tranny OBD1. Thanks in advance.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

Easier then oil.

Jack the car, or you might not have to if its not lowered. You should know what the tranny is, sitting infront of the passanger side. Under the car you'll see its block. There are 2 bolts, a lower one with a square imprint in it, and a higher bolt. Lower bolt is to drain the tranny, higher is to fill it. You cant miss them, they're the only 2 bolts that look like they'd come off.

Make sure your car isn't all hot, crack the bottom bolt and drain. You might want to go pick up a crush washer if you're anal about that sort of stuff. I keep reusing mind, havent had a problem. When its done draining, rescrew it back, break the upper bolt. You will have to use a hose and funnel for this. Snake a hose from the bolt up threw the engine bay, with a funnel.

ONLY USE Honda Manual Tranny fluid, OR, GM Snycromesh w/ Friction Modified. Honda is at honda dealership, gm is at either gm or chevy dealership. If you have a healthy tranny, with no grinds, go with oem honda. If you're having some wear and tear, switch to the GM brand. I had a grinding 5th gear, when cold, and at high rpms. 2 months with gm running threw it I haven't heard a grind since.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

2 quarts (bottles). I think factory calls for 2.2, but at the end of the second bottle it'll actually start coming out of the fill hole, since you'll never drain the old fluid completely, so be quick with it.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

The car must be level throughout this process to properly do a drain and fill

You are only suppose to do Honda Fluid because other fluids do whacky things in our transmission like foam up and make shifting difficult, just do not do it...

And I know 98vtec says he does 2.5 to 2.75 quarts and it shifts better.

Oh and instead of the funnel and hose there are little pumps at autozone that cost like 7 bucks and do the job fine.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

I've ran Amsoil GM Synchromesh MTF in my T2T4 LSD, and so far so good. Has been a year now I believe. I will change back to Honda MTF though.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

penzoil also makes a syncromesh equivalent to the GM stuff. I used a bottle of that and filled it up the rest of the way with Honda MTF. works awesome.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

Make sure you crack the fill bolt before the drain bolt, just to make sure you can get fluid back in after draining the old.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

Whatever you do DO NOT USE GEAR OIL. If you wanna cheap out you can use 10w30 motor oil but just use normal oil.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

why cheap out...$20 gets you enough Honda MTF for a change (2L). Not worth saving $5 and honda MTF makes a world of difference assuming you're trans doesn't have any problems.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

Well you can't use the newer honda trans fluid in older honda transmissions and good luck finding the older stuff. I have been using engine oil for 6 years now with no issues.

Directly below your throttle body on top of the transmission. It has one 10mm bolt holding it on. You'll have to take off the air filter intake tube for easier access.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

In the fluid capacities at advance auto it says the mt fluid is 10w30 is what is used. So why is everyone saying use only honda mt fluid? What's the difference.

Re: Manual Transmission Fluid Change, Question

Pretty something with the motor oil heating up makes it bubble and the transmission ends up not liking it. All I can say is HMTF always feels really smooth whenever I've used it.

You can't use synthetic fluid with the Kaaz LSD as it is a clutch pack LSD. You have to use a mineral based oil, or at least use a mineral oil for most of your fluid.

Also don't use the hole on the top of the gearbox for filling. Do it properly and use the proper fill hole. That way you can tell when the gearbox is exactly full.

Amsoil MTF is good.
