H/I/E stage- what happen with ecu...

6 months, and a couple thousand dollars later, I'm finally at the h/i/e setup. Current build:

1993 SI body w/ JDM h22a, m2b4 lsd tranny swap.
Hytech replica header (2.5 collector)
3in mendrel exhaust
Apexi n1 turbo muffer
AEM v2 intake
p28 pherable.net chipped ecu w/ h series basemap

Anyway, I wanted to point a couple things out. For the exhaust, there was some concern with the 3in piping, and the car already lowered, that ground clearance would be a problem. Cruising around, it's fine, I was a little worried it was going to flat out touch the ground when it came off the lift. You must be careful though, even little humps and bumps, going too fast, cause the header to scrape and hit. I've already got a few hits. =/ I see repairs in the future.

But more importantly, the new ecu has fixed my idle problem, and my sluggish acceleration between 2k and 4k rpm. I'll do a quick recap of my idle problem just encase anyone happens to stumble across this thread and is experiencing the same thing.

Symptoms; Rough idle ONLY at temp, idle search (slowing dropping and raising between 800 and 1200 rpm whenever you'd let it drop to idle), fickle times (it would only rough idle seemingly at night, or when it decided too, sometimes it would start, then stop itself).

Because of this odd behavior (like a kid throwing a temper when they decided too) a lot was ruled out. Vacuum leaks, sticking plates, loose bolts, gaskets..etc. The other big clue was that the behavior would change every time I switch out the IACV's. The rough idle would still occur, but in different patterns. I finally bought a brand new one for 200 some-odd dollars, and it turned out to cause the problem constantly, vs the junkyard few I picked up that would cause it periodically. This pointed me toward an electrical problem, out of the IACV, TPS and ECU, nothing else electrically controls the idle. IACV was out, I was sitting on 5 different ones, and the TPS was checked and replaced months back, so that was unlikely. It left the ECU, I couldn't think of anything else that would cause a slow search in idle (like it didnt know what it was doing lol). Popped in the new ecu, bam, the rough idle is gone, and the search is gone too. It'll now drop straight to 1k rpm, and stay at 1k rpm like it should.

Point being, if people are having weird idle problems, or even the sluggish problem, and if a new ecu is on your list of things to upgrade eventually, bump it up to the top, it might solve a lot.

I know its rare, but I had an automatic accord that would get itself stuck in 3rd gear. I was quoted 1500 dollars to replace the tranny, till I went on a whim and picked up a junkyard tranny ecu that fixed the problem entirely. With my own past experience, I know that ecu's eventually go bad, just like any other electrical part.

Re: H/I/E stage- what happen with ecu...

Pherable is the way to go imo. For the same price you're paying for just the chipped ecu (around 200 dollars) they're giving you a 'as close as possible' basemap with what you tell them is done to your car.

My new exhaust is loud, so I can't really say I've noticed a difference in performance. I went from stock to i/h/e in about a week, so there is a gain, but I can't pin to what gave me it, or how much the ecu really gave. When you go from Waaaa to BBWWAAAAA, you think you're going faster, even if you aren't lol.

Still, the fact that it fixed my problems, and its ready to go for another tune when I get around to the dyno is reassuring.

right on man, my motor is strong but lately has been doing exactly what you have mentioned above with the idle that comes and goes when it wants to.

Re: H/I/E stage- what happen with ecu...

Mind of its own usually equals electrical, lol. Check the IACV and TPS though first. IACV's can be pulled from a junkyard for 10 dollars a pop, and the TPS should read .5v, or between .500-.900 ohms (decimal might move depending on what your reader is set to).

If it just happened you should go threw the typical check-list, 200 dollars is a lot to go on for a guess hah. I went with it cause I've been dealing with this for a month and went from top to bottom with no solution. If the ECU didnt' fix it I was about to pull out the entire mani to clean it, I had no other options.

Its just something to keep in mind if you run into a dead end though, sometimes its not even mentioned in rough idle solution threads.

Re: H/I/E stage- what happen with ecu...

Great thread man. I'm having a similar issue on start up but the strange idle only occurs once I start driving the car and put it back into neutral. The needle will only go up and down twice before stopping completely. I'm also experiencing a lack of power in acceleration between 2.5k and 3k RPMs. At a complete stop in neutral turning the steering wheel also increases RPMs sometimes which I thought was very strange. Does this sound like an ECU issue to you?

Re: H/I/E stage- what happen with ecu...

When turning the steering wheel, you are apply a "load" to electrical system, so the idle will move slightly when you do, for there's small changes going through the tps, iacv and ecu. (I think thats correct anyway, read it somewhere).

I can't really say djp, but I would advise you to check your tps and iacv first. An ohms meter is like 6 bucks at ACE, I've used it plenty of times already. The first thing to check would be your IACV, for that will effect your idle over everything else. Go to a local junkyard, dish out 12 bucks, and get another IACV. If the problem persists, or changes in behavior but still there, then I'd say try the ECU.
