Key not in ignition but Engine still running.

Alright let me start off by saying I don't know too much about cars. If there is a problem I usually take it to my mechanic (family friend) an he fixes it while explaining to me.

I just got home from going out an I park my car. I put it in park an turn the car off like normal. Well except for the fact that my key is in my hand but my engine is still running. So now I'm confused lol. So I drive over to my friends house so he can look at it an when I get there an park the car turns off.

At this point I'm annoyed because now he can't see what I was talking about.
He gets in an turns the car off an on an it works fine. So I end up leaving back to my house. When I get home an an turn the car off it does it again. So I just kept putting the key back in an moving the car from drive to park an eventually it shut off on its own. Any reasons as to what could be the cause of this? I don't want to go to work an have my car not shut off. That would suck.

Re: Key not in ignition but Engine still running.

sounds like a problem with the ignition switch or the actual key cylinder, i know hondas are notorious for bad ignition switches but I think this could be a problem with the cylinder you put your key in to start the car. most of the time the bad ignition switches make the car shut off with no warning but they don't usually keep the car from turning off

my good friend had that same problem with her colbalt, we were going 60mph and she took the keys out and threw them in my lap, needless to say i was freaking out, she said it was the lock on her tumblers.. not quite sure wtf that is but maybe itll be of some help!

Your sure it's the engine and not the fan?

^This
My fans stay on after I turn off the car too. Depends on how long the drive was/how hot the engine got.

Re: Key not in ignition but Engine still running.

its your ignition switch bro it happened to me last December. i took mine to honda to get it diagnose and they told me its my ignition switch is bad so I asked them how much would the repair cost they checked their system and they found out that the prelude from 97 to 99 model has ignition switch recall and they fix it for free. check your VIN number to www.Honda.com

Are you sure that your house wasn't built on top of an Indian burial ground? Since it only does it when you are in your driveway...

Sounds like an ignition problem... I would take it to a GOOD shop and have them look at it... Or ur family friend
