My first prelude/ nightmare

Well I just purchased my first prelude. It's a 96. Should be happy right? Wrong. After looking at it and doing some online research found out it had a motor swap done. It's a type s and it's not the f22 engine. It's the h23 engine. The guy said he was having problems with smog. But does run. Said it needs an o2 sensor. It runs rich and idle jumps. Anyway it's obd2 I live in California and I want to make sure it passes smog. What should I look for as far as well, everything?

Smog is trouble some in CA. When I got my Lude last summer to pass smog i had to switch header, buy a new cat and get 02 sensor. Oh well I just used it as a learning Xpierence. Hope it works out for you dude.

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

Not exactly nightmare worthy. The H23 is as good an engine if not better than the f22. As far as the o2 and idle. As was said, buy new o2 sensors and check the ecu. also do a full tune up for the idle. new plugs, wires and a dizzy cap+rotor button.

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

Search for the final idle problem thread. You probably have air in the coolant system or your fast idle valve needs some attention. If it needs an o2 sensor... get one. I don't really see a nightmare here.

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

The real thing I'm afraid of is that what if someone put an obd1 system in it. Wouldn't the smog guys catch that? I do agree that th H22 is the better motor, rather have 160 hp than 135hp. It does have a new cat on it, that's a big plus. I drove it 60 miles to get it home, and never seen the CEL come on. If it's running rich wouldn't that light come on? Plus the car needs some interior work , that will definitely be a nightmare. Oh and it's got custom wheels on and the speedo is like 10 mph off. And to top it off it was lowered so much that when you hit a bump it feels like the cars going to break in half.

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

well if its so low your going to have to swerve around them, my first lude sat on a 4 inch drop and Florida has speed bumps everywhere, i hated the person who put on the coil overs haha. and besides that its not a nightmare they are older cars your going to need to show it some loving and work on it. good luck

And found one plug on the engine harness that had some wires cutoff and looks like it's obd1.

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

does your check engine light come on at all? does it come on when you turn the key to the "on" position? because if it doesn't come on then...it won't come on at all, make sure it doesn't have black tape over it or that the bulb is out...you may have a light on and can't see it, and if you get a code then that will probably help you find your problem alot faster

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

Not a nightmare at all..

Make sure it's obd2..if it not you can switch it over..the H23 in not a bad engine

Hardknox is right about the idle..

What size are the wheels? I have 18's but it only off a little

As far as the interior goes..eBay, craigslist, and for sale threads off people parting their car out... Honda junkyards too

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

How easy would it be to switch to obd2 ? I looked up what's hooked up to the ecu it's one those obd2>obd1 adapters. Is it common to find cut wires on the engine harness if it was switched to obd1. I work alot so this is going to take some time. Oh and as far as the ecu goes, is there like a cover for it? Looks like the passenger could kick the crap out of it easily. I want too make the car right so it will pass smog and be able to drive it. Also I'm on a low budget, not looking to spend big bucks. Any help with parts would be appreciated.

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

well thats certainly up to you man, if it were me i guess i would still want to find out what the problem was and make sure it wasn't a cheap fix, we already know its probably got a code in it you just couldn't see because the light is probably burnt out or the bulb has been removed, but its up to you man, good luck

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

Well if I can get some obd2 parts it would make it easier. This car is obviously an oddball since it's a 96, compared to the 92-95 models so parts are going to be scarce. To the other guy in Cali I live in Merced.

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

hope ya get everything runnin right man. but the h23 is a great motor but so is the f22 and the h22 is good to but it all depends on what you wanting to do with it. bc the h22a the trany has short gears so it revs really high sux on gas, so if you wanna go boost i would stick with tha h23. oh if you need a h23 ecu i have one

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

did some checking on ebay. I found an ecu.P14-A13 is the right one isn't it. And also did some research. So let me see if I have this right. my cars a 96 which would be OBD2. Someone put an OBD1 motor in it and used a jumper harness too connect an OBD1 ecu. From what I was reading the obd2 motor has a crank sensor bolted to the oil pump, but the obd 1 motor is not made to where you can bolt up the crank sensor to the oil pump. But the obd1 dizzy has a crank sensor built in? And just needs to be rewired to work with obd2? If this is the case I think I can make it work. Just need to do some more research on how to do it.

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

Well good news. found another prelude. 94 si with auto tranny. And its all stock!!! Runs like a champ. But needs new windshield, tires, and catalytic converter. And a little bodywork. Screw that 96 I'm going to use it for parts then scrap it.

Re: My first prelude/ nightmare

Yeah I should have inspected the 96 better. I'm a little new to hondas. Once I figured out it had an H23 swaped the first thing I looked for was the ECU. Then I saw what I guess is called an OBD2- OBD1 jumper. After that I knew I was screwed. But at least the 94 I just got is OBD1, and has an H23 motor. So the 96 will be parted out for spare parts Mainly engine and mechanical stuff, and the seats since their in better shape. Plus it's not everyday you pay $1500 for a 94 prelude from the wrecking yard with cold A/C.

On my 94 the tachometer goes kinda wacky. Needle jumps. Any idea how to fix that or do I need to replace the instrument cluster?
