Timing gear and key need to come out so the oil pump will slide off. Grab and pull

By back "plate" i take it you mean the plate that the crank gear, water pump and balancers are currently on correct?

Re: H23 crank removal

on the t-belt side, it goes; crank pulley, timing cover, crank gear and key, front balancer shaft gear, water pump, rear balancer shaft casing, gear behind that casing, then oil pump.
then on the tranny side there's also a plate that holds the rear main seal in that you gotta take off too.

that's all off the top of my head. prolly other smaller stuff that i forgot.

Re: H23 crank removal

Its not a plate, that's the entire oil pump. And yes the entire pump comes off the block.
Are you positive you have all of those mentioned unbolted off the pump??
